Look at the amount of reworking the firebox has needed so yes it was flawed, a lot of rigid stays replaced by flexible stays, the original design was for a steel outer with a copper inner, and the staying reflected that, the redesign, despite extensive computer modelling could have not shown what the stresses of heat cycle's would be, only experience could have done that, hence why there has been a redesign of the staying
The reason I asked about what grate was fitted is because i was not 100 per cent sure, so why not ask someone who has been on the engine recently. a drop grate would have acted differently, to a fully rocking grate, because of the relation the rocking parts have to the side and end carriers,

Anything you like, he will be wearing so much PPE so they wouldn't hear you anyway, as they will be either working with molten metal into a casting mould , or CNC cutting large bits of metal

A machinist...from someone who has an engineering degree, but had basic training as a machinist as part of that degree, and has spent a lot of time and energy making stuff work ever since, so probably qualifies as a fitter too :)

It was measured in the UK and knowing the audience on here it’s quoted in imperial. Across the diagonals cold.

I was fortunate to get into a variety of industries from oil, aerospace, motor manufacturing even into tea plantations in Africa. I always used to ask if I could look around and was amazing the stuff I picked up and sometimes cross reference it to an altogether different industry. For instance many a time faced with a problem, I used to say to myself, "I could do this or that", I saw that at so and so...as I have said, I've been very lucky.....

The fireboxes of the Bulleid light pacifics are fully welded platework, but with screwed stays. MNs have welded inner and outer fireboxes but a conventional riveted foundation ring, and the same screwed stays. Both those boxes have the added complications of the thermic syphons, which you could consider as a further source of weld distortion, or some useful extra bracing tying the crown and inner throat plate together.

If you look at German steam locomotive design, you will find that all the threads are Whitworth form, not metric.

I've had involvement with a couple of European steam locomotives, albeit Victorian in age. After an initial false start thinking I was cleaning up some M20 stud holes, I soon realised that they were both 100% Whitworth in their construction, even including the nuts and bolts.

Much of the above is appertaining to the A1, although I realise it was the scrapping of the P2 pony cannon box kicked it off. Would it make more sense to request Admin move the A1 boiler stuff to its proper home?

I can relate to that. Being of a more practical bent than many of my PhD colleagues I’d always try to avoid reinventing the wheel by looking for parallels in other industries, then working with the manufacturers of whatever piece of kit it was that had taken my eye to adapt it for our duty. If that failed then the first principles guys got a go, but it was obviously a slower and generally more expensive route.

Best not to try and debate it if you struggle with the terminology.

I hate to say it but I have the same qualification you mention, luckily done part time and paid for by an employer. It means nothing to me, and I never use the title. Only recently the silly hat and gown went in the wheelie bin.. clearing out before I go to landfill.....
