Sorry Martin, that is a comment too far, have you ever been to the building, have you seen the facilities it offers, i know that is a no.
So why jump on the bandwagon, you might find out what the plans are, and from the recent Communication Cord, your assertion 60163 would not get back to Darlington are debunked.
Amongst so many other of your offerings, plucked out of the sky.
Sorry if that causes offence, but it is the way it is.

All kinds of predictions have been made in the Communication Cord. Some have even turned out to be correct...

No offence taken, but i guess time will tell, but i'm not alone in that conclusion, and heres why, Assuming that West coast have contracted Riley's to undertake maintaince, on 60163, whilst it remains in their care, given the choice, Ian would rather have the engine at his works if it needs work done, where he has a fully equipped workshop with lifting capabilities, and the ELR next door to test run, and sort out any issues, Actually that makes sense, if it's something that can't be fixed at Carnforth, For example, lets say that the boiler due to be delivered for Prince of wales isnt needed right now,, but Tornado starts having issues with its boiler, , then a boiler swop could be done quite fast , and the engine kept in traffic, whilst a new firebox is constructed , or the kit of parts is built up.

In five years time coalburning on a grate will be disgusting and not bring cash.

The pipe over drivers is a steam accumulator and is heated by green or nuclear electricity at night.

You're at it again..."Ian would rather have it in his workshop"....have you spoken to him personally, and he has said this ?.....

Where have you got information from for the basis of your assumption?

I GIVE UP, im not going to bother any more, For the 1000's time, this is only my thoughts, OK and It was expressed on here by someone else, that Riley's are contracted by West coast for the next 3 years, to maintain the locos IN USE, , Now this could be a miss qoute, It might mean that Rileys are contracted to use their engines for the next 3 years, I DONT HONESTLY KNOW, CAN I SAY WHY NOT ASK THE PEOPLE THAT SAID IT IN THE FIRST PLACE,

Ralph, I was given that info from someone in the industry who I’ve known for 50+ years, so please feel free to correct me, do Riley’s not have a contract with Carnforth?

The answer to your question is simple surely?
If the cost of newsletters was affecting the overhaul budget then maybe tell us? Then propose a way forwards? Seems like another comms failure to me.

Given the enormity of effort that the 6 month overhaul schedule, as publicised by the Trust, would entail I can only say that I was stunned by the near total lack of activity and progress 5 months into this period.

Without getting into the specifics of this case, the cost (time as much as money in modern times) of comms is often grossly underestimated by organisations both charitable and commercial, plus if you do it well you have to make sure that you continue to do it well as it looks rubbish if it either goes to pot or stops entirely (as I suspect the A1SLT are discovering to their cost now). Having had the misfortune to have been made to attend several corporate comms courses over the years lesson 1 is only start doing it if you have the inclination, ability and resources to continue doing it to that standard otherwise it often causes more long term harm than good!

I think the contract is for West Coast engines, Tornado is not a West Coast engine it just happens to have a working agreement with West Coast and is on their list of approved engines as are Bahamas and Clan Line but neither will be overhauled or maintained by Riley & Son

As I noted in the 10A thread I do wonder whether there is a lot of 2+2=6 going on regarding this and similar matters both on SM but in the wider media....

Bloomin' ek! Coming to read this thread is like the old XH558 threads circa 2015.

Great to see 163 is out on a loaded test run today!

I don't know if there is a contract or just an informal working relationship, that sort of information is way above our pay grade which as volunteers is zilch.

Thanks, but it won't stop those few on here who take exception to my posting, what is my take on certain matters, and it's always the same people, I don't know why I bother, I really don't,
