Yes I am an active volunteer
A lot of roles allow a large commitment being there early leaving, late and getting to places not accessible by public transport. Volunteer at the Wensleydale and am quite blessed with having viable public transport from York but it can make it long day and working rotating shifts on the mainline means I’m unable to commit to the same days each week.

I’m not saying they don’t. But on my own line the loco crew is probably the only one where 10 or 11 hours on duty isn’t unusual starting earlier than any other staff and finishing later. Other jobs are cleaner as well. I think that’s a combination of factors that do cause people to pause.
