Some H & S Managers get drunk with power ang go over the top just to show they have the power. Common sense and talking to the people that do the job are the way they should go, but some think they know best and make everyone's job harder or spoil it for others. ORR will not mandate CDL on Heritage railways unless given reason to though heritage railways being slap happy with doors. Sloppy door closing at stations, poor lock maintenance or staff not walking up and down the train while in motion monitoring passengers will give reason to mandate

A drunken person can stagger onto a road and be run over. Realistically there is nothing that Highways England, the local authority or whoever can do about that so nothing is done. What could TfL do about a drunken person stepping off a platform and walking into a tunnel? Refuse drunks access to the network?

I think the answer is probably already in place on the DLR system, with the plastic screen (I think they are there to prevent "jumpers") with doors that operate only when a train is in the platform. How long before we see them on the NYMR, I wonder?

DLR doesn't have platform edge doors, are you thinking about the London Underground Jubilee Line extension stations or the Elizabeth Line (CrossRail)? In the case of Jubilee line they are actually there to stop people getting knocked over by the pressure pulse of air being pushed ahead of the train by the plunger effect. On CrossRail management of the tunnel temperatures are just as much a factor for their use as passenger safety.

    Regards,

    Dan

I stand corrected, but I have vague memories to travelling to Canary Wharf almost 20 years ago when there were such screens. IIRC the overground Jubilee Line wasn't open then, but time does play tricks with memory. I also note that the person in the BBC report referenced had taken both cocaine and ketamine earlier that evening, surely not typical daytime behaviour of the average tourist on the NYMR!

Jubilee line extension was opened in phases in 1999. Canning Town to Stratford is above ground, while the rest is underground.

    Fire Risk

    Update 10/05/2025

Due to the ongoing, unprecedented dry spell, we’ve made the decision to continue operating all our services with diesel traction until further notice, helping to reduce the extreme risk of lineside fires.

Paul Middleton, Director of Mechanical Engineering said: “It has still been especially dry since March and, with the weather set to continue with little or no rain, we’ll be operating our fleet of heritage diesel locomotives on all services.

We’re working closely with local partners including the North York Moors National Park, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, and wildfire groups to help reduce the risk of lineside fires.

All of our planned services are still running, and we hope you’ll join us for a scenic journey through the North York Moors to the coast at Whitby.”

Thank you for your continued support.

Can some steam operate to Whitby? Less than ideal, but it will please the punters.

Could the timetable adjusted to allow engine changes at Grosmont and trains passed at Goathland?
I think, a few years ago something would've been devised to enable some steam running.

Assume in the too difficult category .
Also in the past the management would be sensible with as previously mentioned diesel
piloting over the middle section .
It’s easier to unban steam when you’ve banned yourself rather than being told by others that you aren’t running steam which is my suspicion after the last fire …

I understood that Network Rail had banned unassisted steam locos a few weeks back after a few fires.Tangmere possibly?

As I understand it, the NYMR's current diesel fleet is 37264, 47077, 31466 and 31128. Am I right in thinking that only the latter is passed to go to Whitby?

Yes I would have thought it would have at least needed a diesel either on the back or behind the steam loco.
Were there not fires on the NR section started by 45596?

That's correct - for the steam side think its just 926 & 5428 (with 44806 to follow this year?) from a Facebook post a while back Repton was being kept warm as a thunderbird if required, but not sure if that is still happening...

Given the importance of Whitby to the operation, this really does seem like poor planning.

Does the NYMR own those first 3 diesels on your list, I have no idea, because if not surely it is down to the owners to decide if they want to swallow the costs of mainline compliance.

I don't think they own any of them. 47077 is on loan from the D&EPG, 27264 is based on the railway but privately owned, 31466 is Pete Best's and 31128 I think is owned by Nemesis Rail.

Obviously home based D7628 Sybilla is also mainline registered but currently being repaired. But regardless, steam bans are now at least an annual event so I'm surprised that when looking at the traction available, the MPD isn't saying 'We don't have a spare diesel for Whitby - do we hire one or do we pay for the equipment fitting to one of the hire fleet?'

If only one Whitby diesel is serviceable, is a Whitby steam loco being kept in steam and FTR in case of failure on the Grosmont to Whitby section?

I don’t think so. I certainly didn’t see any evidence yesterday but I could have missed it in my wandering around.

@black5 I suspect that's what was being referred to regarding Repton in the above post - but even so that seems risky if there's a reason they're not using steam in the first place and the area is tinder dry.
