Where’s the doom and gloom on here and elsewhere with regard to Scotsman’s visit?

As, presumably, the newly acknowledged "Jonah in Chief" I wouldn't have said that I've been particularly negative, even if I could have been at a time when there's talk of steam loco haulage being suspended as a result of a large moorland fire........ The Strathspey aren't the only line to have had a bad rough shunt that put a lot of carriages out of action in recent times, either. In other words, 4472's (60163,s) visit should do well, but they do represent a risk, and anyone who discounts that is, to be frank, an idiot.

Of course there's risk involved. That's uanvoidable in any commercial venture. It's just a question of one's approach is to focus positively on the opportunities created.

I rather wish that approach could be taken to other possibilities.

Class 33 No. 33202 Dennis G. Robinson is now scheduled to haul the following services this week, rather than Tornado (due to the current fire risk):
Friday and Saturday: 1035 & 1440 Grosmont to Pickering and 1200 & 1615 Pickering to Grosmont
Sunday: 1035 Grosmont to Pickering and 1200 Pickering to Grosmont.

Don't forget that contracts are agreed between the parties before they are signed. The quoted explanation and the fact of static days being written into the contract can both be perfectly true.

Good to see the 33 getting a run out, but Tornado was working off Pickering so none of those services were going to be operated by it. (1055/1235/1410/1640 weekdays, 0930/1235/1410/1705 Sundays)

Please Note: The NER Autocar running on Sundays in August has very limited seating and may fill up quickly.

Not sure how long this has been showing on the NYMR website, I have seen it running on a few Sunday, and always appears overloaded, plus overheats when pulling its coach, had 37 push it to Goathland last Sunday, however rumours suggest it will appear regularly until a DMU appears, instead of using the spare mk1 rake on Sundays.....

    Class 33 Running

We are pleased to announce that Class 33 No. 33202 Dennis G. Robinson will be joining our standard services from Friday to Sunday this week. This distinctive example of the 'Slim Jim' sub-class took part in our Annual Diesel Gala earlier in the year, and we are pleased to say that the owners have very kindly agreed to assist our diesel-hauled services during the current fire-risk mitigations we have in place.

The locomotive is scheduled to haul the following services through the North York Moors National Park:
    Friday: 1035 & 1440 Grosmont to Pickering and 1200 & 1615 Pickering to Grosmont.
    Saturday: 1035, 1440 & 1745 Grosmont to Pickering and 1200 & 1615 Pickering to Grosmont.
Sunday: 0930 Pickering to Grosmont and 1240 Grosmont to Pickering Return North Yorkshire Pullman.

    From the NYMR Facebook page

"This weekend at Grosmont Engine Sheds… meet the mighty No. 60163 Tornado!
On Saturday and Sunday, Sat from 09:30 to 13:00 and Sun from 09:00 to 15:00, step onto the footplate of this incredible 21st century LNER Peppercorn Class A1 steam locomotive and see what it's like on the footplate of a steam giant.
A big thank you to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust for making this special visit possible. One of their team will be on hand to answer all your Tornado questions, from its engineering to its journeys.
It’s your chance to get up close to a modern-day steam icon, soak up the atmosphere and snap that perfect photo. We’d love to see your shots from the footplate, share them in the comments, and join in the excitement!"

A rather disgruntled post that those who had booked for 60163 specials Friday were not able to see the loco

    No. 60163 Tornado Summer Visit

    Update 18/08:

With extra lineside fire safety measures in place, including additional fire patrols, we’re pleased to confirm that Tornado is scheduled to run from Tuesday 19 August. As the locomotive is main line certified, it is fully fitted with a spark arrestor, ashpan screen and ashpan spray. To give it an easier run, Tornado will also be hauling our shorter set of carriages, reducing the work required to haul the services. As always, if conditions are not suitable for steam operation, our heritage diesel locomotives will step in to operate the scheduled services.

    Update:

    Tornado working 16:40 Grosmont-Pickering today

I'm travelling today and I've actually been surprised by how lush and green the surroundings look. The environs of the SVR look like the Sahara in comparison! 63395 and 60163 both in steam at Grosmont with 5428 in charge of Grosmont-Whitby trains.

Just back from our annual holiday to North Yorkshire. For this year we decided against travelling in advance now we have our 10 month old, last year our party was split across 3 bays of 4 so busy was the train on the return and didn't want to risk that, so planned to visit Grosmont/Goathland one day and Pickering alongside the Scarborough & District Model Railway show on our second weekend. Alas, we choose Tuesday to visit, and the day steam service were replaced by diesel. So not the video I had hoped to produce, and it started so well with my first ever filming visit to Darnholme and a lovely sound as 5428 climbed the bank with what turned out to be the last steam to Pickering until what looks like this afternoon with Tornado. The rest of the video shows the various moves around Grosmont as diesel replaces steam, ending with 5428 rather forlornly stuck behind the crossing barriers at Grosmont waiting to return to shed. We did visit Pickering on Saturday, thought the model show was very good, had lunch at the station in the cafe, but decided against filming any more diesels...

Due to the cooler temperatures and the Fire Service drawing down their resources at Langdale Moor the NYMR has taken the decision to reintroduce steam on select services between Grosmont and Pickering from this afternoon (18th August). The services will be the 10:55 and 14:10departures from Pickering and 12:35 and 16:40 departures from Grosmont. Tornado will be the rostered locomotive.

Just watched Tornado on the webcam, only flicked it on in case the 9F was in the station. Surprised how few were on the train, really only the coach behind the loco looked like a decent load.
Do we assume this is due to the late change back to steam or is Tornado not as popular as has been claimed on here by some?

Just been watching Tornado on the webcams, steam cleaned people on platform 2 whilst departing Grosmont. With 5 on seemed an easy climb into Goathland. Fingers crossed the weather plays ball and the railway makes the right operating decisions.

Seems like a strange thing to announce by inference that the NYMR own engines don’t have such luxuries as spark arrestors, ash pan sprays and the like. Surely this isn’t correct?
