Ah yes, the 67 tucked in behind shows that '28 will do little, if any, work.

Diesel not doing all the work. I think the danger points are the gradients like Hildenborough Bank

Or does it show there’s no generator car in the formation and is required for ETS?!

I think @Deepgreen has yet to catch up with what the MNLPS Facebook page said about today's trip and the fact there is no generator car in the consist.

If the generator car is out of action the diesel is normally at the back. It saves an extra loco and driver for the ECS at either end of the journey

Hot line needed by you to DB Cargo to verify that. ;)

Didn’t look like that in the video of it racing through Ashford

Yes because often it’s true and not for any weather related reasons. There could be good reasons, like saving water but it happens. I don’t know if the diesel was pushing, you would have to ask the crew

No, to me it shows that it's required for the diesel to do most of the work, and rightly so in the present conditions. Otherwise the diesel is at the rear.

I could hear no work from '28 through Ashford in the video and the smoke from the chimney was 'loose' rather than being 'pumped' out. Again, in the current conditions I would hope that it would not be risked to work steam, as every time there is a fire there is an increased appetite for more limits on steam running.

So the lack of generator is absolutely nothing to do with it? Just like in fire risk rain is the only thing to with it?

    Stubborn comes to mind o_O

I realise that the generator car is missing but the diesel is only tucked behind the tender rather than the rear if the steam is restricted to minimal effort.

Yes, it does... What else do you consider has an effect on dry conditions, other than water? I'm agog, but I suspect that belongs in the fire risk thread.

Again, the generator car being absent doesn't automatically mean the diesel is tucked behind the loco, but when it's used as the prime motive power, it does. I have seen plenty of Belmond steam runs over the years without the generator car and with the diesel at the rear (where it is obviously preferred for ECS moves anyway).

Well knowing that the risk level is also based on how many steam runs are due to occur, the cloud cover, and the heat id say there a few factor that effect three fire risk level!

With no generator car the clear primary reason for the 67 was ETS. No argument

Could it not be the other way round? Diesel there because of fire risk. As it is there they don't need the generator car. On this occasion the diesel is expected to do most of the work, so they put it at the front.

See my post above, the diesel is on the back when there is no generator car and during the leaf fall season for insurance purposes. When the reason is fire risk it’s behind the steam, in this case it’s clearly serving a dual purpose. I don’t think DB would employ a second locomotive and driver for the ECS unless it’s really necessary.
