one would like to think that in circumstances like this differences could be put aside to assist steam, and the proximety of Carnforth could be of assistance to 71000.

There the bang seems to be once per revolution of the driving wheels, whereas in David's video from Leyland there's a somewhat different sound once per several revolutions.

looking on Traksy , 71000 looks as if it is sat in the loops at Carnforth . A different time and could have been sat on 10A

Sadly, I don't think that's going to happen.

You would hope someone might have loaned them a spanner over the fence..;)

I still chuckle at the sight of the LSL liveried 57 hauling West Coast branded stock at the SVR diesel gala, anything can happen on neutral ground!!

I hope the issue with 71000 isnt too serious and it can soon be back & meet its commitments for the rest of the year. There's something about The Duke that excites me even more than most steam locos, I think its a loco we are still learning about.

Another non-expert view coming up. The noise is a panting sound that sounds like steam not exhausting as it should. @osprey suggests a poppet valve and he could be correct. The good news is that I don't believe such valves need lubrication, so any mechanical hiccup is hopefully not a serious one. Caprotti valve gears are clever but tricky.

Everything that moves needs lubrication, either dynamically or hydrostatically...

Don't let's digress but I'm not certain you are correct on that. My comment was really to do with what happens when a key component loses its lubrication. I always thought that a poppet valve was different. I'll leave you to visit Google. :)

And it was all going so well. In hindsight I wonder if those involved wish they opted for that final test run on Thursday. Anyway, here's some brief shots of the Duke on a charge !

    No need to Google.

Poppet valves are akin to four stroke i/c engine valves. Whilst the valve/port seat face doesn’t need lubricating as there’s no sliding contact, the valve actuating stem must certainly does.

IIRC on Caprotti gear, the whole cam box is oil-filled, which will lubricate the valve stem from above.

Indeed. I think the statement is misleading and should refer to the valve seat, which requires no lube, whereas piston valve rings do...
