As said its been done before, IIRC they do it with the tanker parked on the bridge above on Westbourne Road with the pipe passed over the parapet onto the platform below, I assume 'cos the station access is narrow and thus not suitable for a tanker to park on the up side.

My guess is it's the easiest way of telling the computer to insert a couple of mins into the schedule over the hills. 165 mins running time for 141 miles with two stops/starts. Not often you see a 50 plus mph running schedule these days!

Cruised from Crewe to Barton. Mile on mile in the mid 70’s with a max of 78 hit at two locations.

I think its best to wait for our official timers to confirm the Shap speed. For what its worth I made it 46.

I made a minimum of 47mph on the climb to Grayrigg and 45mph around the bridge of sighs (47mph at summit) on the climb to Shap.

I got 48mph over Shap Summit using speed hub app on my phone
(In rear coach so 71000 would have already have gone over summit)

Neil, I'm in coach F too at the very back. I had a quick look out the window and clocked the Duke over the summit at the 46. Some wait until the whole train is over then clock it. Horses for courses !

Footage of a spectacular northbound run from 71000, racing past Coppull Moor at 70+ in full sun then blitzing the final mile to Shap Summit 90 minutes later.
