Reportedly an AWS fault where it wouldn't cancel. Could be something as simple as a set of tips on the acknowledge button not opening or closing when pressed, or maybe something more serious. Hopefully a simple fix.

I would be fairly confident in if 71000 can't take the trip 61306 will be on instead, it's a sold out trip when I last checked, 61306 has no gauge restrictions on that route so there's no reason to believe it would go Diesel hauled or cancelled.

Do we call this a failure of the loco or a failure of systems on the loco? Appreciate both have the same outcome but the loco itself is mechanically fine and good to go.

loco is technically a failure as a core safety system is not working as it should

It's actually more than a technical failure, imo. If one of the injectors on a loco starts to play up on a journey then the crew could soldier on. If the TPWS or AWS etc fails then it's an instant failure.

I'm thinking of heading down to Preston Park and then Haywards Heath to see it. I'll keep an eye on the timings as the day goes on.

Been a while since the Brighton Line had a double header, 44871 and 45407 did it a couple of times quite a few years back.

So, does this assume 71000 is FTR tomorrow?

Not quite, the rule book has procedures in place to follow when a safety system fails in service so you can carry on. What you can’t do however is enter service or start a new journey with such a fault.

Duke of Mayflower a few minutes down at Haywards Heath - a pretty rough screengrab from a pretty rough video (had a three year old sat on my shoulders so I don’t feel bad…) One or two people a little disappointed not to see 71000, but the consensus seemed to be enthusiastic about the evening double header!
