I noted this from the G&WR website, which is current as of 31 August:

35006 Penninsular (sic) & Oriental SN Co: Bulleid Merchant Navy 4-6-2; boiler is at Chatham and expected to be returned to Toddington and fitted to the chassis shortly. Should steam 2010

Does anyone have more info about what they mean by "shortly" in this case?

I think the original post was referring to 34101.

It was 34101 who had a chime whistle because I have a NYMR video with Hartland on it and it was a chime.

She did, am i right in thinking it belonged to an S160? I seem to remember seeing an S160 running on the NYMR with a Bulleid whistle, not sure why the swap may have occured though.

May have been just fun and hijinks, or the Bulleid whistle had a faulty valve at the time of restoration.

Nah. I think that the original post was referring to 6619, which has a chime whistle AND a Kylchap blastpipe. Almost a proper LNER loco!

I beg to differ. Bulleid Pacific asked a question about the overhaul of 34101, received an answer and posted this in reply "I hope they put a Bulleid whistle on it this time, as I seem to recall that she had a chime whistle at one point..?"

*Draws in breath* The subject of the original post was quite rightly about 34101 (I realise some may not see the picture of the cab of said locomotive on a well-wagon posted at the beginning of the post). However, I went on to relate that LNERifying locomotives is not uncommon on the NYMR, with 56xx No. 6617 being an example. I hope this clears any misunderstandings, but I thought all people could see my picture of 34101 on this forum. I'll try to be more specific next time ;)!

Close enough... I got three out of four numbers right, and let's be honest, I am an "uneducated" Southern enthusiast who thinks that most of the rival's engines are the same!

thanks for clearing that up chaps. Nothing wrong with a bit of Lnerification.
Thinking on, if OB Hadnt gone to the Southern and stayed until Gresley passed on we'd probably have More P2's (Lets face it more Bulleid than Gresley) than A4's in Preservation...

I'd settle for one P2 for now. IMHO 2001 as built was the best looking loco constructed for a UK railway.

If we're going to surmise what might have happened, then if Bulleid hadn't gone to the Southern, he may not necessarily have been given the CME post on the LNER. I'm sure the LNER high command knew that Bulleid was an 'ideas' man, who needed someone to curb some of his flights of fancy. As such, I believe that despite Bulleid being Gresley's Personal Assistant, they may have kept him in that post, and promoted Thompson regardless. We'd be in a right pickle then, no more P2s, and almost certainly no Pacifics. We must remember that the LNER was beginning to get cash-strapped by the late 1930s, and would not have been able to afford much more pioneering work. Despite this, I've always wondered who'd have taken up the reins of the Southern if Bulleid had refused the post...

If that's the case, he must been in his late 50's early 60's when he designed his pacifics.
