For the second day running, the afternoon returning train from Kingswear, the number of coaches have had to be increased from 7 to 13 to handle an increase in passengers

13 carriages! What pulled that? Be a handful with the gradients there surely, all the footage of stuck pacifics etc, grip problems aside..

GWR 42xx tanks were designed for hauling South Wales coal trains. Up to 800 tons. Up Welsh Hills and curves. More than suitable for the P&DSR.

Pacifics were designed for high speed, relatively flat and straight track.

    Horses for courses, I'd say.

Congrats to the P&DSR for getting bums on seats that will hopefully return to other lines.

The weather is set fair for the next few days as well, so I hope all Heritage railways make some hay while the sun shines

The Manor on the front and D7535 at the back.

Not strictly accurate as D7535 was inside the steam on both days, returning as banker.
However the sound WAS certainly stupendous.

I travelled on Tuesday and the same train was load 11 with the Manor on it's own.

Even with the 1 in 60 and some tight curves, 5239 in particular woulden't break sweat on load 13.

Yep. They may not look it, but they've got more grunt than most. Think of them as an 8F without a tender. Awesome machines.

yeah, both the 42xx and 52xx are amazingly powerful engines, they will both pull a 10 coach train in first valve and about 35%. Also very economical. A perfect choice off engine for many bigger railways. It is surprising though, how very different the two engines are to drive and especially fire.

And with regards to the big trains, this year has beena cracking one. Thanks to everyone who has rode on the railway, as a reminder for those who dont know, we are running the wednesday's in october too now.

It's nice to know you're doing well Rory, and large trains I bet the Manor sounded good, pity I missed it.

I havn't been down to the PDSR for far too long now since the First TE which is very unusual for me, but I've been distracted elsewhere, hopefully I'll get chance to return before the end of the season.

Out of curiosity will you be running trains when the Xmas TE's come or do they fall in the same dates as Santa Specials anyway.

Yes, has been a very busy year which is good.

I believe the X-mas TE have been cancelled due to lack of interest.
