Late notice I admit, but for anyone in the West Yorkshire area this weekend with some free time:

The now annual gala, organised by the Friends of Kirklees Light Railway (the volunteers), and held on the second weekend of Setpember.

This year, in addition to our own line-up, we will be hosting four visiting locomotives, 3 of which have been resident at the railway previously. This gives us a grand total of 8 steam engines:

    - KLR 2-6-2T "Fox" - recently returned from overhaul
    - KLR 0-6-4ST "Badger"
    - KLR 0-4-4-0T "Hawk"
    - KLR 0-4-0+0-4-0T "Owl"

    with visitors:

    - Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway 2-6-2 #24
    - CCLR 0-4-0 "Mountaineer"
    - Bure Valley Railway 2-6-2T "Wroxham Broad" (ex-Tracey-Jo)
    - Winmill Farm Railway (ex-Fairbourne) 2-4-2 "Sian"

Aided where needed by our stalwart diesel 0-4-0DH "Jay".

This year's theme is "On the Line Again" - all the visiting locos have spent previous time as resident at Kirklees, apart from 'Mountaineer', which has only been a frequent visitor.

This an event not to be missed - especially the Sunday 1700 ex-Clayton West, the famous "Shelley or Bust" train which sees all serviceable steam locos on the front - this could see all 8 steam locos hauling it.

In addition to 2 service trains operating every 30 minutes (loco changes at each end of the line), we will also have the following:

    - Clayton West to Skelmanthorpe shuttle
    - Demonstration freight (top'n'tailed) from Shelley to Shelley Woodhouse Tunnel
    - Vintage vehicle display
    - Model Railway exhibition
    - Photo display from previous galas.

Timetable now available on the Friends of Kirklees Light Railway website - http://www.friendsofklr.co.uk, and there's also a facebook event page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=118924945100&ref=ts

Will we be seeing any of you there?

    Thanks,

    Dom Greenop
    KLR

24 and Mountaineer have landed, but not before Sian arrived 10 minutes before them. We now await the arrival tomorrow morning of Wroxham Broad before clearance testing.

I forgot to mention ticket prices; these (for adults) are as follows:

    Day Rover £12.00
    Return Trip: £7.50

Children's prices will be about half those above; I am not sure of the price of a family ticket.

Attached is a pic of Mountaineer about to set off on a single-coach test train this afternoon.

As a Canon user, I'd be interested to know why you have changed your camera!

    SLR click,click,click,click,click,click,click

    FZ38, ------------------------------- (nothing actualy).

Slr are not good for sound when you are try to record video for one, my Nikon d40 was brilliant providing I wasn't trying to video as well, even better than the 400d, E510 & A200.

Secondly is was always my intension to upgrade from the D40 to a D60 or something even better, so there I was looking at teh D60, and the new D3000 when I clicked on the FZ38 review and at that point I remembered how good my FZ28 was, on top of the it is light, easy to carry, etc, which with all the other stuff for the camcorder I thought I would give it a try, and at around 250 pounds it relatively cheep well to the alternatives. Kirklees was my first out where are started use use it, had it at North Norfolk's gala but I opted to favour the camcorder 90% of the time, so most of the time I didn't even get it out of the bag. When I did also found the HD recording with a nice wide angle 27mm lens handy close up.

As for my Nikon plans, well I have kep hold of the 18-200mm lens, so I may opt to venture that way, but looking ay the results so for of the FZ38 I am more than happy.

Just for the record out of the SLR I would rate the 400D as being in general a let down, in good lighting it took great picture, in almost everthing else it struggled. The sony verry good, better than some of the unfriendly reviews , the E510 was verry good. but lens options required deep pockets, But the d40 despite its only 6meg picture size just walked all over all of them, what you see is what get every time with the nikon, no tweaking , straight to jpeg, bish, bash bash. I supsect by this time next year I will have a nikon as well, for those time when I am onlytaking photos.

Sorry, I thought it was your camcorder you had changed! I think it's taken as read that Nikon SLRs are the best, but I've never been able to afford them. When I used to do stills - do video all the time now - I had a Canon and was very pleased with it. Second best perhaps, but a very good second and at an affordable price.

Funny you should say that, I was looking at the panasonic hdc-hs300, on paper it looked good , but review wise there seemend little to gain over my HG20 and twice the price, so instead I opted to get a wide angle for the canon instead, should be in the post tuesday so hopefully I can take for a spin at SVR.
