Just read SR website, and from what I can make out, there will be 2 steam engines in operation this saturday, 34070 isnt running service trains.

What it the other one...................6695 has left. It may be 34028?

34028 is planned to be in daily service for a couple of weeks.
On Saturday 19th September; 34070 will be re-dedicated. It will be working a Southern Locos Wessex Belle charter at 1310 & 1430 ex Swanage. As this runs in the normal DMU path, there are two coaches available for normal passengers.

3rd October looks good on Swanage railway, because according to the SLL website, all 4 operational locos will be in steam.

2 bulleids and 2 standard tanks in one day...oh luxury!

I'm just back home from a fabulous week in Dorset including Swanage Gala on the Friday. Looking at the photos on here it seems that 88 was a star. I too like that livery a lot, even if it's on a 7F!
My highlight, though, was one of 34070's starts from Swanage, with a little wheel slip and just enough exhaust to make her exit from the bridge (by the turntable) interesting.

Thanks to the organisers for everything you provided, especially the downloadable WTT (other lines take note!). Hope you're suitably encouraged by the good attendance. I think the ticket prices weren't bad value for money at all.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many couples and families were riding the trains. It was a happy atmosphere, so perhaps the best place for those all-day photters was exactly where they were. My wife would like to thank the conductor with the frock coat and loads of gravitas, as he came close to being her perfect Fat Controller (though imho, sir, you should get a waist cushion and a top hat for next year, lol. Promotion to Swanage acting stationmaster, perhaps?).

Great day, we'll be back, God willing.

    Glad you enjoyed it!

On a separate note, while I can't claim these are my photos (I wish!), I found these on a Fotopic search and thought they were deserving of a wider audience:-

    Some absolute beauties in there.

Thanks for the pics, Rumpole. Mark's courageous choice of locations reminds us how beautifully steam trains and the English landscape fit together - and it doesn't have to be at Ribblehead or Shap. I'm guessing that he took a long lens to the hilltop north of Worth Matravers, so handy for the pub too!

Would the SR consider this suggestion for next year? How about recreating a 1950s Waterloo-style Pacific start, with shunter as banker?

But do it at Swanage. Let no. 53 take in the stock, either on a previous service train or ready for the first departure of the day. Uncouple as usual, but then have the M7 obey the same starting whistle, and push off as "claggily" as possible until the WC/BB picks up speed.
This would need careful regulator control by the two drivers, to avoid the M7 pushing against all that dead weight, but I'm sure that SR crews would be up for the practice runs! 53 would end up in a convenient position for joining a goods in the siding, just as I found it this year.

Just an asterisk against "53" in the WTT would let the enthusiasts know when to turn up.

Does anyone have any idea as to the timetable for the 3rd October? It is the SLL AGM with 80104, 80078, 34028 & 34070 in steam.

The websites timetable is never up-to-date. There must be a special timetable operating which the website doesn't have any info on.

The public timetable is correct. Other locos are out on special workings. Similarly with Manston last weekend, it was out on a special working for its re-dedication, although as it was running in the DMU path there was a coach or 2 for regular passengers.

It advertises thetimetable of public passenger services.

Other services next weekend are private driver experience services for SLL personnel, so therefore not available to the general public.

Why should the public timetable take into account these workings?

A 'banker' on 5 coaches with a Bulleid is a bit over the top (it would also need special instructions as our rule book doesn't allow us to 'loose-bank', all assistant engines must be coupled to the train).

Having taken 9 coaches unassisted out of Swanage with 35027 at the 2002 Steam Gala I can say that going it alone is much more satisfying!

Seriously though, can anyone from Swanage actually confirm that the 4 locos should be in steam? I know that they are not all for public use but I was planning to venture down there on Saturday and it would help if people could confirm it, otherwise it would seem a waste of time going down there just to see 80078.

My understanding is that both Bulleids will be out.
One on the service train and the other on Southern Locos Driver Ex.
Also the DMU will be on the 2nd service diagram

    Swanage Railway 3rd October:-
    34028 & DMU service trains
    34070 SLL Playdays

    4th October:-
    34028 & DMU service trains
    80078 SR public Driver Ex

The mooted idea of double headed Bulleids and double headed Standards on 3rd Oct was rather scuppered by 34070 having a busy day with SLL Shareholders. And 80104s regulator is in bits for re-bushing.
