I see from UKsteam.info that Clan Line is going to Ropley today. Does anyone know when and/or the route, please?

She's just finishing her annual maintenance, so I'm guessing there's a job that needs tools available at Ropley but not at Stewarts Lane, such as the wheel drop.

I'm in Alresford 'box on Sunday, so I hope she's still there then.

    TIA

Will this be her first visit to a preserved railway?

Not sure. I think she has been to the East Somerset on a rail tour but I could be wrong.

Confirms she's coming, and staying for a week, but nothing about when she's moving today. If she's coming during daylight, then I expect she's almost there already. If not, then she won't set out until after the evening rush - say 19:00-ish?

I wonder if she is there yet? Didn't see anyone waiting for her on the way home as my route crosses the line to Alton in several places. Although as there are no timings anywhere I guess only a select few know them! No doubt she will be straight into the wheel drop shed (or is 73096 still in there?) for her bogies to be dropped out for attention. How do I know this?.....................

The visit of 35028 to the MHR for repairs was revealed at the MHR AGM last month. It is not known whether 35028 will operate any public services as the MNLPS are not keen on operating her on preserved lines.

Sooner or later, mnlps are going to have to swallow their pride and operate 35028 on a preserved line. If anything, to generate some revenue.

I don't think it is pride, it is just a different way of doing things. Just because it doesn't match an individuals perceptions does not make it wrong.

How you figure that ? many loco's running on preserved lines don't get anything like the steaming fee's required to fund the next overhaul, earning would also be offset to a certain extent by the added wear and tear, plus 35028 has the huge plus of the VSOE contract.

35028 may be elusive for normal people to travel behind, but better than having it rotting up a headshunts for a few years awaiting funds.

May I suggest you not knock the MNLPS in such a way.
Clan Line is a credit to the whole of the mainline steam scene and after running solely on the mainline for so many years I think they know what they are doing.

Yes, they are a huge credit to the preservation movement. I can fully understand their views on preserved line operation.
Colin Chambers said at the AGM that they will run her in after the repairs but he is not sure if they will run her on service trains. It would be nice if she did............

I am not trying to knock the mnlps. I am sorry if that is the impression I gave. I know that mnlps do not need money with the vsoe. I also think that it is a credit to UK railway preservation.

I am just trying to say that sooner or later it would be good if they did buckle and run on preserved lines. I do agree that mnlps have got the right idea about being sustainable for the future, but they might try and relax themselves a bit. I mean, 3 round trips on MHR with a loading of 100 tons isnt going to wear it away, is it?

Why, I assume they have all the work they can manage on the VSOE. If they lost that contract then it would be a different matter but until then...

They don't hang about. Are the Mid Hants guys doing the work or the MNLPS?

Locos that rely solely on main line income also end up short of funds for an overhaul. Steam locos seldom if ever pay their way without injections of cash from other sources.
