Yes Rhys that was me, all I can say is thank you for letting me stick my camera out for the critical bit... As you say standing all the way from Euston must have been a grueller, but worth it in the end.

Matt we must definitely do that again, but I have a feeling that anything else will be an anti climax..
    30th December anyone???

Thanks to everone who has posted videos and stills, the coverage is brilliant.

My video covering most of the run is being processed at the moment and will be uploaded in the morning.

    A Thingy...
Despite my little adventure in the morning getting to Crewe from Swansea (won't be doing that again, and 60017 knows what I'm talking about!), I really enjoyed it, and all credit to Messrs. Andrew and Santrian for providing us with a fine performance. Although I'm generally a Southern fanatic, I was impressed with the condition of 6233, and I thank the support crew for allowing me the opportunity to 'cab' her at Carlisle.

It was great to meet the NatPres crew at the beer festival, and if there's one thing I'll take away with me from yesterday, its that immortal statement regarding the true etymology of GWR: "Gresley WAS Right"! Thanks to Spamcan81, Belle1, 60017, RalphW and others for making me and Brian welcome. From the sounds of it, a great time was had by all, even if I did lie about me being quiet on the outward trip! Anyway, hope to see some of you on the next NatPres outing for more high-speed running.

    Cheers,

    Thomas.

Really good to say "Hello" to so many names (with special commiserations to John who had to sit next to me) who post on here and a good run by loco and crew.

Haven't had a chance to view everyone's pictures and videos yet - but I will.

My effort for the outward leg (at Crewe and Carlisle Stations) can be found at:

    another year?

And as they say, its not over till the fat lady sings. Subject to a satisfactory boiler check in December, they are going for another year on the main line.

Thanks for sharing those Chris and nice to meet up again Saturday.

Last night I edited and uploaded a video of the run through Wigan, Golborne and Warrington on the return but have just removed it this morning as I realised there is no sound! I will have to have another go later.

It was a great day out and a pleasure to meet all of you, but I have noticed that although a couple of members were actually quite close at times we never actually met. Always next time.
I've now got my full version up and running, only took 1 hr 30 minutes to upload to youtube....

A cracking day out and good to meet some faces at the beerfest - you know who you are.
First ever trip behind 6233 and first ever trip over Shap behind a Duchess. Some great sounds to listen to and the grit blasting I received while recording them was well worth it.
Just a pity that an "admin" coach was added to the rake and making the "front" coach
three back in reality. Having the whole train turned at Carlisle was a bonus but must have been annoying to any "thrash junkies" in the diners.

Just a few numbers from my GPS,

    Distance behind 6233, 282miles.
    Average speed, 51.6mph.
    Max speed, 78.6mph
    Shap summit north 37mph.
    Shap summit south 48mph.
Once we had cleared Shap summit north bound and reached 70mph, we continued at 70mph and over, all the way until slowing for Carlisle.

Thanks for those numbers Ralph ! My head is still reeling from the shouted question (opposite table) " how fast are we going?" and when given the answer the shout of " is that all?" Av speed says it all really ! Well done 6233!

    How heavy ?

Just out of interest, and to add a bit of "meat" to my video project, would any of you knowledgeable chaps know exactly how heavy the train was, 13 mk1's and 2's, a bum on every seat, and a class 47?

Putting on my pedant's hat, it was a 57 on the rear or so I was told. As for the weight, figures between 617 and 630 tons were being quoted.

57601 was the loco on the rear weighing in at 120.6 Tons.

Given that the 57 is good for 3.5 coaches the full load would be 16.5 x 35 tons per coach = 577.5 tons plus the usual 2 tons per coach for load giving a gross figure of 609.5 tons.

The drawback is that Mk1 coaches vary from 33 - 36 tons whilst the MkII vary from 32 - 34 tons and Restaurant / Buffet cars can weigh in at up to 39 tons thus without identifying and checking the weights of individual coaches in the rake ( allowing extra for coaches with heavier Commonwealth bogies ) the best approximation appears to be the 610 tons that was the most common quoted figure that I heard at the lineside.

Thats a nice one Graham, but I had my head out on the other side..:(

Matt, yes I heard that said whilst standing at Crewe on the return, but it depends on the view of the boiler exam later this year. There was also mention of some work to be done so she is still likely to be out of action for a couple of months at least.
