My video is finally sorted out, just some stuff from the southbound run. I must invest in a PC that will run some decent video editing software, the quality of clips on Youtube goes from strength to strength whilst mine look as they have been made with a £5 phone camera.

Nice to meet up with you too Thomas. Who was it that made that comment about GWR? I remember it but I not sure that I was introduced to him or did we just invade his table?

    Eh up all !

Finally finished playing with my footage from Saturdays monumental assault on Shap at the weekend.
Tried something a bit different this time, and put some music in the first part. So if your not partial to a brass band, turn the sound down for the first minute or so ! However if Holsts "The Planets" Mars bringer of war is up your street, crank it up !

The second part is basically the full climb from Tebay, i kept ducking in and getting a shot of the GPS for speeds, but it all looked a bit wobbly so had to resort to freeze frames and some chops.
Oh, the GPS is Ralphs by the way (hope you dont mind mate!) seems more accurate than mine??
It really was an honour to be witness to what was achieved on Saturday by Bill and Frank, the Duchess crew, RTC and WCRC. All thats good about steam on the mainline.

    Matt Curtis.

I think we just invaded his table (I think I sat opposite him on the 'Downsman' behind 34067 in August; if not they are very alike), or more to the point, we invaded the table of those two Scottish chaps to my left (I got into a conversation with the younger of the two, and he has made a pre-New Years' Resolution to ride on the Jacobite). Either way, I liked the quote, and had never heard it before. He said that he'd heard it from an LNER man who was vegetating as a volunteer on the South Devon Railway...

Didn't yours read that we hit a maximum of around 120mph + or something like that whilst at the beer festival Matt? :-$

    Cheers Neil !

Whilst Ralphs GPS is more accurate, it doesnt record BPH (beers per hour) which is what mine recorded 120 of whilst at the pub !!

Not quite sure what happened to the team photo, the only record we have is in my youtube clip. This link should take you straight to the point.

A mate was telling me today that he had read in a Railway Mag that this was a record run, beating a Shap record set before World War 2. Was he winding me up or was this genuinely a record ? Can one of those whom measure these things confirm ?

If it was, then it will have been an honour to be aboard :)

Duchess of Abercorn ran Crewe-Glasgow and return in 1939 with a20 coach 600ton test train and set many records that day, she passed Shap summit at 30mph using 35% cutoff, which gives some indication of how much was in reserve, but she did have an awfull lot of work to do that day. Would be interesting to learn some of the details of 6233;s climb of Shap, I doubt she was on much more than 40% cut off.

The current Railway Heritage magazine has a full article by Steve Leyland over pages 10-11, comparing the two runs. Key facts include:
    - 6234 in 1939 loaded to 620 tons gross; 6233 in 2009 loaded to 632 tons (load 13 + a class 57, which did not apply traction at all)
    - Times from Tebay to Shap summit (MP 32 to 37.25) 7 min 5 sec in 1939; 5 min 59 sec in 2009
    - Speeds at Shap Summit 30 mph in 1939; 35.8 in 2009
    - Times from Penrith to Shap Summit: 18 min 25 sec in 1939; 14 min 23 sec in 2009

Plenty more info in the Railway Heritage article. Buy it, it's a cracking read

My new Steam Railway magazine has just dropped on the mat and this has a two-page article by Mike Notley (pp10-11) comparing the two northbound runs, with broadly similar conclusions. More on the southbound run is promised next month.

The HR mag must be popular this month as I tried 3 newsagents that normally stock it and they have sold out!

I will try further afield this evening.

SR was not in stock this morning in my local newsagents.

Interesting piece in HR but no horsepower figures that I could see. Would be nice to know what her peak output was.

Mike Notley's article in Steam Railway deals with this, bringing in figures for Hamilton's best performance as well
