The "ALLOCATIONS" page at www.82045.org.uk may go some way to answer your questions. There aren`t actually any Standard class 3`s at present on any rails. 82045 will be the first. Perhaps you are thinking of Class 4`s ?

Progress going well on 82045 and members newsletters posted today. There may be some stretchers in place on the frames soon...perhaps in time for the SVR Gala.

The 82s were used, for a time, on the Cardiff Valleys Interval services, largely replacing the TVR 'A' Class from these workings. They were not particularly successful at this work and were soon replaced with 51xx 2-6-2Ts. This was to be expected; after all, they were classifed as 3MT and the knockabout work of fast running between stations which were, for the most part, quite close together, soon told on them. Everything else used these services were Class 4 or above. The Taff 'A's were classified as '5' under the BR scheme.

They did some good work on the Vale of Glamorgan line, where the longer runs between stops were rather kinder to them and they were capable of a good turn of speed on the stretch between Llantwit Major and Bridgend, particularly after the closure of Southerndown Road station.

They should make the ideal locomotives for the preserved line scene and it is a great pity that they had all moved away from south Wales before the end of steam. Woodham's would have been full of them otherwise.

They were never fitted for push - pull or Auto working although one did work a Barry - Pontypridd via Wenvoe train, propelling in the Up direction due to the late failure of 5527 on shed. Very naughty but the proverbial blind eye was turned. None of this 'train cancelled' nonsense so frequently encountered today.

At least two 82xxx's worked the Swanage branch - 82004 and 82027. The former was based not at Eastleigh but Bath Green park.

More good news! Thanks for posting the update. It's heartening to see the progress being made and all the skill and craftsmanship that goes into making the patterns too!

Is there any news on when it is hoped charitable status will be attained for the 82045 Locomotive fund ? It was orginally mentioned that this might be some time in October.

We are still hoping it will be October Pesmo, though it is going to the wire. We should have some positive news next week....all a bit frustrating as is usual with red tape!

In the meantime we have had a temporary "flyer" produced for the Tornado week at the SVR and we will out and about everyday spreading the word to the thousands of visitors.
The slogan is " We`ve got a Tornado on the main line. How about a fresh breeze on the SVR"?
Hope we will recruit lots of new members.

Thanks for your interest and support.

Excellent thank you. Charitable status makes a small difference to income, as it should allow the 82045 folks access to things like large employers matched giving schemes, so for some donors whose employers operate these, it will effectively mean that they can double their contributions if the employer agrees. Every penny counts after all.

Are there any other cash advantages to charitable status, VAT perhaps ?

Early indications suggest an advantage from gift aided donations but no relief from VAT. Full advantages yet to be fully clarified, if and when.

We are members of BR Standard Steam Locomotives Owners Group which is an umbrella type organisation to benefit owners of BR Standard locos with information, drawings, patterns, sourcing parts, bulk buying, etc.

    Thanks for your good wishes.

We have registered both the Foxfield Railway & the North Staffordshire Coach Trust and are in the process of claiming back VAT on gift aided donations. Well worth the effort and a step in right direction - and it only took us 40 years get round to it !!.

I think it will be income (and corporation?) tax on gift aided donations, as there's no VAT on donations

IIRC a registered charity can reclaim 28% income tax and transitional relief, so if you give 78p the taxman makes it up to a £1 (or if you give £1 the taxman makes it up to £1.28). Higher rate taxpayers can then claim back 12% through their tax return

I'm not sure of the VAT regime

    After the tornado

Many thanks to all the staff and visitors to the SVR last week who were most supportive and made our task of leafleting the Tornado trains as easy as possible( in the circumstances). The responses to our flyers are now coming in and hopefully will continue.

Given enough support we will, one day, be witness to a brand new, very resplendent 82045 waiting to depart from Bridgnorth on her maiden journey.

Just in case anyone has missed us, our website is at www.82045.org.uk. Plenty of reading and lots of photographs there.
