Does anyone know what is happing to 50033?

    http://class50.zenfolio.com/p809647594/ed281a4

It used to be part of the NRM National Collection, was then loaned/given to STEAM and is 'owned' by Swindon BC. However it's now dumped out in the open at Tyseley, steadily rotting away. Would this have happened to a steam locomotive?

That's a bit harsh. The original poster asked if anyone knew what was happening to the loco and all anyone came up with was a fact page of basic information (that the original poster already knew) and a load of photographs. It certainly did nothing to answer his question and he made a comment to that effect.

You may have over 1500 posts Spamcan81 but if they are all like that one it says much about you.

Is it any wonder that this forum has the reputation it has?

  6. wasnt this part of a scheme for a rail school type thing in londons docklands as there was calls for tyedsly to overhaul a pannier and fred the austerity too

Maybe Lewisb06's did nothing to really answer 50041's question but then again Tynwald's remark added nothing either other than to mildly ridicule Lewisb06. And of course your post really helps answer the OP's question. Pot, kettle, black.

  8. It was but the rail school idea came to naught - as it was obviously going to from Day 1 - hence the 50 ended up at Tyseley.

(Sorry to interrupt the bickering with something relevant to the original question ;-))

I Think the problem is there are too many diesels preserved when you look at various websites there are loads of diesel groups asking for money a recent example being 55002 which has had less than £1000 pledged to it hardly enough to pay for the paint let alone a overhaul.

Diesel enthusiasts support galas but the general public prefer steam so what work if any would Glorious get apart from the above i remember riding behind 50021 on the Glos Warks in the early 1990s but that loco has not turned a wheel in anger for many years. and you have projects like the CO BO which are still yet to run the overhaul of this loco is taking as long as a barry rebuild.

I suspect the fact it's a NRM owned loco is a major factor in that.

Probably because it is more difficult than a Barry rebuild as is the Class 15.

I do agree there are too many diesels preserved now especially class 50s and 37s but people are obviously free to spend their money as they see fit, they bring more volunteers to the sector and in general don't impact on the well being of the lines.

One concern that has been raised on diesel forums is that once the current diesel generation (now generally in their 30s and 40s) have gone to the shed in the sky is who will look look after the diesels going forward? Most youngsters in the sector seem to be are far more interested in steam. Lets hope that some of the better examples maintained by groups such as the DPS, CFPS, BT4F, SDDG and AIA Group etc can survive to show an important part of railway history.

As far as 50033 is concerned the NRM never wanted it in the first place as it doesn't show a particuarly useful design or innovation and obviously doesn't have a place for it at York or Shildon.

Donated by NRM to STEAM-nothing to do with NRM now.

Thought Steam and NRM were the same as far as locos are concerned? Aren't the GWR engines (with the exception of the unrestored 2-8-0T) at Steam still part of the National Collection?

Funny thing is Steam didn't appear to want the engine either as it was stuck in a shed out of the way whilst there...mind you the WR and LMR didn't want the engine in the first place either...

Hope someone from NRM isn't sent to find their locos based on the website-1439,4027,4771 and D200 aren't where they think.

It has and is happening to steam locomotives - but lets face it - diesels are a passing fad, lots of them around where the owners - who were able to acquire them fairly cheaply - have lost interest and left them to rot.

Very few I guess - the paying public want steam
