Well it is called Railway Magazine after all. Not "Steam and rose tinted nostalgia Magazine." For as long as I can remember RM has covered all aspects of railway operation which of course means in this day and age there's going to be non steam/modern scene stuff between the covers. As for not crediting the original photogrpaher, that info is not always available. I've purchased many a print at collector's fairs that have no name on the back of the photo.

I would agree with Mr Riley's Ghost that the BR issue was disappointing, as were the other issues dedicated to the particular pre-grouping companys, but do feel that the more normal magazine is usually a good mix of modern news and historical articles which none of the other magazine cover in the same way. Although I don't have a big enough interest in the current national network to buy a dedicated magazine it is nice to get the highlights through RM.

Of the other current preservation mags I have been disenchanted with HR of late and found SR a better read, mainly because HR has seemed to forget that proper reporting consists of a balanced and well researched background, instead making sweeping statements that bare no resemblence to the facts and then not giving the opportunity to the accused to reply . Other than that my other regular read is Bylines as they cover the unusual and obscure.

It has its ups and downs but I don't think the criticism is justified.

With respect to the BR special, one point to remember is that, as time moves on, a new generation emerges and what to you may be regurgitated facts may be fresh insights to a younger reader.

Actually, I thought that chopping the BR era up by chairman was a good idea and reminded us it was a business. I look forward to part 2.

Sure I have mixed feelings about practice and performance but it is different and nowhere else is performance being examined. It would be nice to push this further and get critical appraisals of rolling stock.

I have to say I am not drawn to the sort of "news" that fills much of the column inches of RMs competitors and can be a bit of a drag in RM. The internet is a better forum. Magazines need to take the longer and broader view to differentiate themselves.

RM is the only generalist railway magazine. It appeals to a broad church of enthusiasts. Probably the "Telegraph" of the railmags. In general it works.

So you won't be buying it again. Your choice. Like the Sun it has a market and is appreciated by others.

And remember it cost less than the Full English and was probably better for you!

And anyone who has been for an Audi service is unlikely to worry about the odd £4. My last Audi visit cost me the equivalent of 60 years subscriptions. The uncomfortable feeling in your stomach was probably neither the food nor the magazine.

Playing devils advocate for any of these magazines just what is there left to be written about ? Many loco's are now in their 'n'th overhaul, most railways have had an article or many more written about then , We've covered footplate cooking! . At least RM has a "changing" modern scene to cover

I'm afraid to say I have long since stopped buying HR & SR and even now my acquisition of The "historical" magazines is diminishing having stopped steam world & steam days

    Shock horror, I totally agree.

It does exactly what it says on the cover.

Accept it or not, there are many images that come to market without info to help identify the original photographer. You may notice that I did NOT say that this was the definitely the case regarding the current issue of RM. Perhaps your concern regarding this matter should be directed to Ron and Barry.

    "Selfless"?

I understand that images published and sold by the likes of Colour Rail are the subject of payment by them to the original fotter by for the release of such rights.

Accordingly once the publishing rights have passed - the release is Colour Rail's, or whoever holds the rights, and not the original fotter.

    Would you not agree??

They will only be able to respond if they are members of this forum and I very much doubt they are.
