All of the big Pannier Tanks were very fleet of foot. The 94XXs were regularly used on the SuO Newport - Barry Island trains. On the fast stretch between Cardiff and Newport they easily attained speeds into the sixties just as their elder bretheren did on other workings.

It was great to see that video, this morning, of 9600 stretching its legs, complete with bouncy coils springs. Magic.

When you think just how old the basic design of these locos is (57xx & derivatives) it is quite amazing how good they are especially compared to the similar offerings from other pre nat companies.

Even set against an 08 diesel shunter the 08 probably just wins on sheer grunt but how many 08's would also be capable of 60mph passenger working?

Wow! she certainly picks her feet up, never seen anything like it. the only panniers I used to get on were from Castle bar park halt to Ruislip(or whatever the next station was) cos' I prefered the long walk to Greenford across the park instead of the bus when it was anounced that they were to be replaced by DMU's, to get to school.must have been 62/64 or earlier, still a steam nutter, and luckily ended up near steam town.

I believe im correct im saying 9600 has been uprated from 35MPH to the 45MPH of 9466, sounds made a lovely racket climbing Bishopton bank and proved capable of a fair turn of speed, i also saw the Light Engine run at Hall Green in the morning which was worth it purely for the looks on the faces of the commuters!

Few pics from light and loaded trial runs: http://david1984.fotopic.net/c1776808_1.html

You are correct. I spoke to Alastair Meanley at Tyseley who confirmed this.

9600 sure is a nippy little thing!

Yes, same as uksteam.info (except for the 5 minutes that Vintage Trains always knock off the pick-up times).

However, the return times on the letter are 19.42 at Moor Street and 19.55 at Tyseley (about an hour later than uksteam.info). I'm guessing that an hour extra is allowed on the SVR as the times on uksteam did seem a bit tight from Kidderminster and Bridgnorth and back.

    Made my day!

Lovely piece of film Bill, thanks for sharing it with everyone. Great to be able to watch a pannier whizzing along in the open country. Once got a pacing shot on 8mm cine of a pannier doing much the same on the up relief near Solihull, they certainly can go on request. Makes you realise how good the Dean goods must have been with their bigger wheels.

Train arrives at New Street at 0756 and departs at 0814. 8 minutes pathing between Tyseley and New Street.
