Having been reading about her on the PRCLT website, the estimated cost for an overhaul would be £100,000 and at a timescale of 2 years. This got me thinking that this is a relatively cheap and short overhaul compared to say, 4472, who as we all know was completely knackered when the NRM saved her. What I would like to know is, how does the cost and timescale compare to an overhaul of 6233? (which may begin next year, pending a decision as to the extension of her boiler ticket)

Also, purely hypothetically, is it maybe time for 46203 to take the mainline mantle from 6233?

I think that should be £500,000

Id love to see the old girl running again, very fond memories of her last stint of mainline running, besides since hamiltons been butchered only chance to see a BR crimson pacific ;-)

I too would love to see her back, but I think that 6233's boots will take some filling. 6233is a real crowd puller, is as reliable as you will ever see in this arena and with her mighty hauling capability potentially quite cost effective if the trains can be filled to make use of her capacity.

I do believe that there is some merit in sidelining locomotives for a while though, as , much as it hurts me to say this - we in the north west of england have been really well blessed this year with quality steam hauled tours - many of which have involved 6233 time and again over a limited number of routes and I think many people have become a bit indifferent to her charms. It's a difficult decision though and one I personally would not relish making!

It would be a strange decision to revive 46203 while 6201 is running, would make more sense to have one Princess and one Duchess rather then two of each, Hamilton returining to steam appears to be unlikely in the next 3 years.

When is 6201's boiler certificate (or mainline, whichever is first) due to expire?

Just to throw in my two pence on '229 I think it would be a sight to behold seeing her storming Shap with her streamlining on, but it would be an operational nightmare, and even more of a nightmare to keep looking smart

i dont expect to see york pulling 229 apart for quite some time, after all after 4472 they will probally never want to restore an engine to steam ever again and where would the money come from to overhaul 229, 4472 would have almost taken all off yorks funds for any restoration work to the rest of the collection and its going to have to be another public appeal if anyone wants to see a streamlined duchess pounding up shap,

So you think that 6229's return to 'has built' condition is an act of butchery.
You obviously have no sense of engineering and railway history.
The Princess Coronation's in streamline form were considered to be the finest examples of British heavy engineering ever produced during the Art Deco period.Even though Stanier didn't approve of them, but that's a whole different story.
And as for livery, if she isn't in Crimson Lake, pray tell this colour blind old fool what colour she is.
As I've said elsewhere on this forum I was very sceptical at the outset about the project to re-streamline her but when she was finally rolled on to the turntable in all her glory at Tyseley I have to admit there were tears in my eyes.
As for seeing a LMS (not BR) Crimson Lake pacific on the mainline have you not heard of 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland?
And when it comes to seeing a streamlined Duchess on the mainline...never say never!!!
And to reply to Matt 35027's worries about returning 6229 to the mainline being an operational nightmare, she was re-streamlined with this in mind and don't forget she was dragged from Tyseley to York along the mainline, including under the wires. So the only 'operational nightmare' would be keeping the crowds off the railway!!
As for keeping her looking smart, I'm first in the queue to polish her!!!!!!

I just dont like staniers streamlining, i liked hamilton as she was, and margeret rose has run in preservation in BR crimson.

  11. It has been said that stanier himself didnt like the bathtub casing either!

A4 vs Duchess in terms of being the aesthetically pleasing . The A4 is a hands down winner for me . Nothing wrong with the Duchess the the A4 is far more iconic . I think it's also something to do with the sound as well as the look . That wonderful breathing sound of the Kylchap (yes i do appreciate they were single chimney at first) the chime whistle

Now Anthony . Whilst both engines are still in ticket and in LMS livery what can we do to get 6201 , 6233 and 6229 together . We can't let the GWR have it all their own way in 2010 now can we ! (and lets be fair but they are all much improved Kings) (before anyone takes offence that comes with a large health warning and a very big portion of tongue firmly in cheek)

well anthony your the man in the know, or used to be, so whens the public fund raising campaign going to be launched, dont get me wrong, i would love to see 229 on the main line as would 90 per cent of everyone who has an interest in steam , but after the delays and problems with 4472 it would be enough to put anyone off steam engines for life, ,but saying that, 229 would be a known job, you already have an idea of what would be needed and no one was trying to cover anything up as in my own opinion was the case with scotsman ,at least when she (4472) comes out it would have been a professionally done high class restoration
