Which engine will work this section?

The current plan is that the Steam Loco will be on the North/East end so that it can take water at Grosmont Water Column whilst still on the train. The loco will probably be 76079 with 30926 Repton as an alternative. Whichever of those isn't on the Grosmont Santas will be at Pickering, with 45212 as 3rd loco (required for the Moorlander lunch trains).

Unless they have been turned, 76079 and 30926 will be tender first when leading.

However, all this is capable of changing as a similar arrangement was planned for the Novemeber services at Pickering and changed duringt eh first weekend!

Update - I am now advised that the steam loco should be on the south end and operating smoke-nox first!

Santas on the mainline used to be quite a regular feature but I can't think of any other examples in recent years.

Thanks Steven, but is that Pickering or Grosmont? (Or indeed, both!)

Drifting off topic; the best main line santa trains that I recall were the SRPS ones round the Edinburgh Sub. 14 circuits in a weekend; Maude used to get quite dizzy!

Grosmont - at Pickering, the steam loco will run round the train at Levisham. D5061 will provide pre-heating and then top and tail The Moorlander which runs to Goathland and of course can't run round in the station as per the general prohibition.

The SRPS mainline Santas were the main ones I was thinking of, although I seem to remember that BR ran some Scarborough Spa Santas in the late 1980s and were there some Santas from Marylebourne when that was a regualr steam route before total route modernisation?

    Thanks Steven.
Yes, I recall there were some santa trains out of Marylebone (to High Wycombe?). I recall some pre-Christmas trains York - Scarborough in the 80s which called at Malton for some sort of Pickwickian (if that's the word) festival. Truro got an outing on one of those.

No - looks likely the loco with be on the south end, so will be smokebox first whilst running west down the Esk Valley branch (trains will back out on to the branch from Grosmont then proceed towards Glaisdale before continuing on to near Lealhom).

There will be limited numbers of non-Santa seats available on these trains. The section of line they use is anongst the most scenic on the branch.

Lealholm is the booked turn round point but I suspect the precise location will be judged based on experience and how Santa is doing at seeing passengers!

I am pretty sure the reversal will not be in Lealholm platform in case anyone tried to board or leave the train
