Any flame war seems to be coming from your direction as far as I can see. The earlier parts of this thread are quite enlightening. You and a couple of others seem to have an axe to grind, and it's easy to wonder why you're trying to distract attention from what's obviously quite outrageous. Now you've introduced something completely off-topic, put yourself forward as a spokesman for ropley, and expect everyone to take your word for something that's clearly not as you make it out to be. How does introducing some discussion about another engine somehow support a million pounds expended on an engine that seems in a worse state than when work began on it. The answer is of course it doesn't. I can see why people become tired and exasperated when there are attitudes like that around.

Well, if it's in Heritage Railway it must be true.

I dont see any problem with basing her at Southall once she's operating reliably, Tangmere spends most of the time there after all. As has been pointed out before, WCRC's use of the depot to stable loco's is unrelated to the group carrying out overhauls.

I see that according to the latest issue of 'The Railway Magazine' the right hand side axles and axlesboxes are 1/4" out of alignment on 6100. How did that happen?

Rushed re-assembly, incorrect measurements in setting up the axleboxes. Whatever it is, its going to be costly and time consuming to rectify.

Well it depends on how much work Jeremy will allow her out for (or is requested for by the TOCs), if she will be running as regularly as 34067, then yes Southall would be the best call and it would save possibly thousands of miles in light engine runs to the capital and back. But if the pattern of work is more similar to that of 60019 (i.e. periods of inactivity on the mainline but with stints of considerable mainline work) then the MHR would be the best call.

With regards to going to the Swanage in the charge of SLL, IMO SLL have their hands quite full right now with 4 running (2 Bulleids & 2 Standard Tanks), 1 nearing completion (Sir Keith Park), 1 under restoration (Sidmouth) and 257 Squadron I believe is in the beginnings of an overhaul.

But anyway, back on topic, I would have thought that 1/4" out of line would have stopped her even working on the Llangollen and WSR. But if such a discrepancy has slipped through the net then someone has some explaining to do. As I said earlier, the money pit just got deeper.

Fine call it inexperience, but saying loco X should go rly Y isn't really the sort of thing you should be saying. Loco owners will know where they want to send their engines and what is put on places like here will make no difference. Yes it might be nice to see an engine on a particular railway, but there are a few number of posters who continually say locos a/b/c should come our railway and it does get tiring after a while.

Back topic though, noticing the axles and axleboxes are out of line is not something you would have clearly seen with the naked eye, and neither is it something you would have gone looking for! Crewe have discovered it because they will have done a detailed inspection which neither WSR or Llangollen had the time or necessity to do. Aa far as we were concerned at 6880, she showed at Llan fit to run on our line and meet our demands though we realised there was work to be done before she was to hit the mainline. Such a shame that so many faults have caused so many delays as there is a good engine in there wanting to come out.

Getting back on topic ...... I would have though 1/4" difference in axle centres from RHS to LHS would be enough to caue the boxes to run hot?

It will upset the valve events, too.

1/4" on the horns would make it close for piston hitting front or rear cylinder cover!

What sort of clearances could be expected on the 'boxes of a Scot (or any other loco) with high miles and due for shopping?

And that, according to the Heritage Railway article (link posted by Sidmouth a few pages back), is how Crewe found the problem. 6100 was more than a little "off beat" at both the WSR and Llangollen, so they investigated and after trying the obvious things, found the axlebox alignment problem.

Refering back to something said earlier - looks like 6100 will not be taking part in GB3...

Shame, she was booked for two legs of it wasn't she?

Anyway, what work will be involved in putting it right? Obviously dropping the wheelsets out or lifting the frames, but what happens after that?

According to the RTC advert, on the back of the latest Heritage Railway mag 6201 is listed for the days which 6100 was originally advertised for ( although in the paragraph on the other side, 6100 is still listed).

Three running now, Standard 4MT 80078's ticket ran out in October I believe (Unless it was extended but I don't know...) so even more things for the SLL to get on with unless that rummor they wanted to sell her comes true.

Back to Royal Scot, would the axle cock-up and resulting valve gear issues be the reason when I saw her working at Llangollen she sounded funny? Or is it casue I not heard a 'Royal Scot' in motion before?

She was off-beat anyway, but I would think that this new fault would not have helped at all.

..... only it wasn't a 'new fault' when she was at Llangollen, the condition must have existed then.

Having looked at the frame arrangement drawings D42-16159 and D48-18261 I am shocked that this error has happened. You work to the frame datum buttons. The person who has not done this, well what can I say.
