Has anyone heard anything more about these? They were rumoured to be on their way back earlier in the year, with intended homes mentioned including the East Lancs, Scottish RPS, NYMR and G&WR (another one!), but things seem to have gone very quiet.

Ages ago I recall that they had been purchased and needed a "quiet" export route, apparently there was a "new" discovery, but then it all went quiet.

I dont understand why Nat-Pres is/was tetchy about discussing this project. A couple of minutes Googling found the same newsletter ( from an established group dealing with other overseas engines) that was referred to last year. It is still there in the public domain mentioning the proposal by another organisation to buy and repatriate four of the six remaining 8F's in Turkey.

But I'll not post the link for obvious reasons. Dont want to upset people.

Maybe it is significant that the "latest news" on this subject in the public domain does appear to be 15 months old now.

I repeat, if you look for it, the info is out there in the public domain, but it doesn't actually tell you any more than saying that there was a project in being. May all be history by now.

Nat-Pres is/was not tetchy about discussing this project, we were asked politely by people concerned with the project, not to not to discuss it as the inevitable rumours and misinformation could jeopardise the outcome. So in the interests of all concerned the topic was locked.

So are we in the same situation 15 months on, Ralph?

I dont mind deleting anything in my post above if you wish, but as I said, the info is still out there.

What we dont know is if/how the project has moved foreward.

    regards

Or roughly translated: they didn't fancy any competition.

Well so far as I know there has been no communication, but is there anything more known now or would it continue to be conjecture and guesswork.

Conspiracy theories about conspiracy theories !

As I said on my first post, there was suggestions on that topic that if implemented would be quite detrimental ! I'm obviously not going to bring them up again.

As Ralph said a rep for the group read the posts and asked for it to be closed because the outcome wouldnt have been good if people read it and thought "hey thats funny lets do it"...

As for competition, remember the reason why the 8Fs didnt come back from Turkey the first time round was due to oodles of people waving cheque books in Turkey raised the price to £100k per loco.. this time the rep said their already purchased... so I guess the deal is done and it's not about money.. but there not out of the country yet.

Imagine you just mortgaged your house, invested your savings to buy an engine.. then read on the net about some oodle, acting like a noodle, and as a result Hey Merry Christmas by the way your loco's just been repo'd.. youve just lost everything you owned.

If the deal's off the group should fess up.. if there's a surprise it'd be nice to know what it is.. but if we have to wait.. then wait.
But to hound after them and try to guzump it just because your jealous of the price doesnt do anyone any good... if thats what it's about.. then why not go after the guys who bought barry wrecks a few grand, took loads of donations to restore them, and are now selling them for £1mn+.. or worse still them that paid a few K, left them to rot and now want the price of a house for a pile of scrap.

Imagine the alternative; you think that you can do a deal whereby you can corner the market, but the entire stock cheap and ship them back to the UK and a waiting market, the last thing you want is any public discussion that may lead to competition and the impostion of market forces ....

But since we don't know the true story then it's all speculation...

So there was no real reason for censoring the discussion in the first place then?

    True enough..

How much is it going to cost to export 100tons of locomotive to the UK, via ship, or several railway networks with several inspections, a few less than amicable countries.. then when they arrive pay Import Duty and tax...I reckon those "cheap 2-8-0's" will be about £100k each when said and done with the new exchange rate.. then there knackered and probably needing another £300k to overhaul.. then it's a £400k 2-8-0... isnt their a working GW 2-8-0 for sale around £300k right now without a buyer ?

If there's a mob waiting to buy them, why did it take so long for 48173 to start it's overhaul,
Then also 48518 wasnt so lucky either ??
If there's so many people with a cheque book at the ready, howcome they havent come back from Turkey sooner ?

I've heard interesting rumours of one certain Barry wreck x-x-x up for sale currently... i'm sure people would be more interested in that one for it's potential over yet another 2-8-0.

I would say that the potential market may have shrunk somewhat since the time of the original censored debate on this forum, due to the world recession, which may well explain why the deal has not materialised.
Again, in my humble opinion only, a complete (though tired) 8F from overseas would be a much more attractive propostion to many than a Barry condition one (or a 2-6-0)

To be fair though, 48518 was tied up with the Barry project/Welsh Govt so maybe that's what put off a lot of potential purchasers? A straight purchase without any govt/legal complications may be more attractive to those who have the cash waiting...

So which Barry x-x-x are you referring too, or are you suppressing the news as well? lol

    It's just a rumour I heard. I cannot confirm if it's true.
Hence i'd rather not say more an defer to the right people to confirm...
I'm sure if it's true.. it will out and there wouldnt be any reason for keeping it quiet

The "Crab" is reputed to need a new firebox, but that isn't impossible nowadays. Not cheap though.
