Nice to see how works going on over at MOSI. :)

Hopefully I'll be down there once the university term ends.

    Regards

    Ribble Steam Loco News

Andrew Barclay 2261 “No.6”. Once again the main focus has been on the boiler. The 6 stays that were removed as mentioned in the last report have been renewed and caulked. One tube that was very thin at the smokebox end has been renewed. The regulator gland has been removed for machining as it was found the original machining was out of true and a suspect washout plug hole has been retapped. One rivet will probably need replacement in the foundation ring but hopefully, a hydraulic test will be completed before Christmas. New water level gauges are in stock and await fitting. The smokebox front ring has been delivered and also awaits fitting. The boiler has been loaded onto a flat wagon ready for eventual steam testing.

    Hunslet Austerity 3155 “Walkden”.
Successfully passed its thorough and steam tests however the boiler inspector has said the various leaks present around the foundation ring will need to be cured before its next exam. The fusible plugs are presently removed for replacement and the right hand clack and seat has recently been removed, refaced and refitted. The valve chest drain cock has been cleaned out and the operating rod modified so as to actually make the drain open! The regulator rod has also been repaired after the operating crank came loose at the dome end but a permanent solution will need to be applied when the boiler repairs are undertaken in the New Year. Mechanical work will be required before the main running season in 2010 including attention to the left hand big end which has excessive play and the removal and refitting of at least two brake hanger brackets which are loose on the frames. The lubricator drive also needs alteration as it hits the cladding.

Hunslet 16” 1954 “Kinsley”. No progress.

Peckett 1999 “North Western Gas Board”. No progress.

Grant Ritchie 0-4-0 ST works number 272 “61”. The majority of the brake gear has been assembled and the main springs have been refitted. The running plates have been fitted after carefully deciding which plate went where. Patterns have just been made for castings for new rod brasses and the steam brake cylinder is presently stripped for cleaning out. The boiler has moved into the workshop and a start made on removing corroded studs etc.

Hunslet 16” 3855 “Glasshoughton No.4”. Awaiting the return of the boiler.

Hunslet Austerity 3793 “193 Shropshire”. Repainting continues steadily on the chassis whilst the boiler, which now resides on the well wagon, has largely been cleaned out internally. After the boiler has been shot blasted it will temporarily be refitted to the chassis to enable the new smokebox to be lined up and fitted. The new smokebox door boss has been made and fitted, new hinges and crossbar have also been made. The pistons will soon be removed for inspection. The front sandboxes have been removed for repair and repainting and a section of running plate near the smokebox has been renewed.

Avonside 0-6-0 ST 1883. No progress.

    Peckett “Hornet”. Repaint continues.

Barclay 0-4-0 ST “John Howe”. Temporarily carries the clack valves from “Alexander” whilst its own valves are overhauled.

Hawthorne Leslie 0-6-0ST “Linda”. The horn blocks have been refitted and the axleboxes are presently being machined after new thrust plates were cast. Two new axlebox crown brasses have also been cast and await machining. The pistons have been removed, inspected and refitted.

Austerity 0-6-0 “Respite”. Hopefully the blast pipe pattern will be manufactured soon followed by a chimney pattern. 193 also requires a new blastpipe.

Sentinel “9373” St Monans. The repaint is largely complete. Some minor welding is required on the boiler before reassembly can continue.

Bagnall 0-6-0 “2680 – Courageous?”. Basically identical to the original Preston Dock engines and remarkably, it used to work with a former Steamport resident “Peckett No5” in industrial service and was actually considered for purchase for the collection in 1971! The loco is looking like it will be a high speed restoration project-already the frames and tanks have been repainted in primer and the boiler has received a new smokebox and associated small parts. The spring hangers have been refurbished and new pins made. Various repairs and new parts have been provided for the brake gear. The rear R/H buffer has been repaired as have the slidebars and crossheads. It is expected the chassis will be partially wheeled making it a 0-2-0-2-0 soon which will at least make it mobile whilst it awaits the machining of two new axlebox bearings for the driving axle.

Was thinking earlier, I'm not sure if '68030''s still in traffic? Otherwise, I can't think of any austerities currently running as pseudo J94s! :D Should stress I'm only thinking off the top of my head though...

Slightly off topic but nonetheless 2183/15 is rostered for Sunday at the East Lancashire Railway. It will perform alongside 44871 on the light blue timetable.

I have obtained a drawing for the austerity chimney casting for bagnall No. 2746. I shall be seeking quotations for a pattern and series of castings. Is there any interest out there?
