That confuses me even more. I don't have a copy to hand but I'm certain that nothing was reported in the BR Test Bulletin for the loco (1957). If it was the problem it is claimed to be, it would surely have shown up during these tests?

As I said, its only my understanding (or lack of it). May I suggest contacting the owning group to get the info from the 'horse's mouth'? I don't think the Steam Railway article was particularly enlightening, anyway (good bed-time reading, but most things in it tend to be 'spiced-up'). All it stated was that there was a misalignment with the steam ports of its middle cylinder, which is what I meant when I said that "there was a poor (ie. poorly streamlined) connection with the steam passage" (I'm probably playing around with terms in the wrong context there).

I would say they knew exactly what was wrong with it , but chose not to publish the details for whatever reason.

Difficult to prove, but I also thought that BR would not have been keen to publish details of major design flaws in 1957 when they had already pinned their colours to the mast of dieselisation. Reports such as that are conspicuous for what was left out, rather than what was left in them. Anyway, back to the gala...

Interesting line up! A pity there is only one tank engine amongst the visitors, there will be a lot of tender first running.

So I take it that there's no chance of 70013 attending..?

No chance indeed as according to UKsteam, Olly has a busy March and is due out up north with 46115 on 27th

Shame, and I forgot to look at UK steam for the time period in question.

Really looking forward to this one especially if both 9Fs make it. Would love to see them running double headed especially since I missed them at GWR & MHR when they last did it. On a slightly diffferent note and a bit off topic, here's my Autumn Gala collection finally uploaded http://andrew-king.fotopic.net/c1801250.html

But according to LNWR (as quoted in SR #371), there is a possibility that 70000 Britannia will make the gala..... with a bit of luck !

Shame, as I've not had a ride behind that one. The 70000 window of opportunity (or rather, rumour) looks interesting, though...
