Anyone at a lose end on Boxing Day or Saturday may find this to their liking at the MHR. This year this event is running over two days for the first time so let’s hope the weathers OK.

I was at Arlesford briefly yesterday afternoon and everybody was having a ball doing the Shim Sham! Oddly the tourist trap was closed.

    Regards

I came down with the family on Boxing Day. I have to say the event was a little disappointing. There were plenty of people dressed up for the event but that was about it. When we arrived at Alresford there was only one jeep in the car park (frustratingly this had gone after returning from our first roundtrip of the day). As we were hungry we headed to the West Country buffet and had the best Beef stew we have ever had. Compliments to the chef. We were also entertained by the lovely lady singing war time songs. We then boarded the 13.00 train to Alton with 34007 in charge in the hope of seeing some period war vehicles at the other stations. Unfortunately there were not any and I guess this was down to the bad weather preceding Christmas. So we decided to stay on the train and enjoy 34007 in fine form with 6 carriages in tow. When we got back to Alresford we decided to go on the last round trip as the weather turned nasty. Despite the initial disappointment we enjoyed the 2 round trips behind 34007. It was a real treat to hear a spamcan hard at work on the Alps. I haven't had time to get my pictures off the camera yet but will try and get them on soon.

The DMU will be on one service. Not sure of the steam service but it will probably be the 9F.

One thing I would say is that there was a timetabling problem that I have noticed on several occations with the MHR. The last round trip of the day left Alresford just BEFORE the Shim Sham started, and on a previous Harry Potter day, the last round trip again left shortly BEFORE a display things was about to happen.

Just something I've noticed...not really a complaint, all in all, except not being able to sit next to my family due to too many WWII re-enactors in the carriage it was ace! I was even shouting at the GIs for coming over here, stealing our women and handing out chocolate like it was...well candy! Good times. Would have liked a reason to get off at Ropley, some cars or tanks to see maybe, or some gun fire, or something, but it was good, and for an event at a relatively poor time of the year I thought it was good.
