We've had mainline loco of the decade, but locos like Tornado, Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, Scots Guardsman and Oliver Cromwell were ruled out because they're recent additions to the mainline stable. So, here we go again:

I've included the four locos just mentioned in the poll, and included 60019

The poll closes in 7 days

Just voted for 5043. Biased? Maybe but the way she flattened Shap in both directions finally laid to rest the fallacy that a GW engine can't climb the Northern Hills.

5043 among Heritage loco's, though i have to admit Guardsman is one handsome machine.

Shoulden't Tornado be ranked alongside Voyagers and 91's ? ;)

Cromwell, just for the amount of noise it appears to make!

It's a tough one between 70013 and 60163 for me. But I went for 70013 in the end as I had some fantastic runs behind her last year and in 2008.

I've ridden behind and linesided both and I have to say in my experience 70013 was the loudest. Having said that my vote's gone to 60163. Not that the others aren't worthy contenders but Tornado has had such a dramatic effect on the general public.

I've gone for Cromwell too. Tornado is in a class all on its own for me, and deserves every accolade she gets. But the sound 70013 always brings a smile to my face, and just how many tours has she (he) done lately. She (he) has had a very hectic 2009, and is a credit to the support crew who were able to man the loco and prep for the grueling schedule they had!

i agree its got to be Tornado, Because of what it means , To build a full size steam engine from scratch and get it certified for the main line ,What else can you say, Someone mensioned Scots Guardsman ,Sorry but it would have to go some to beat the noise Ollie made climbing from Folkestone Harbour to the junction hearing the exhaust coming off the buildings around the line was magic

These sort of comparissons are always a little invideous. All the locos in the poll are very worthy additions to the mainline fleet, and I can't imagine growing tired of any of them. However, since it's "just a bit of fun", as John Snow might have said, I've plumped for 70013.

Here's a little more evidence to support Ollie. I've just posted a video on YouTube, "70013 Oliver Cromwell, Mainline 2009". It contains some excerpts from Steam Age Pictures Vol 31.
1st March: St David's Day Special: Magor.
2nd April: Cathedrals Express returning from Bristol, New Mills near Pewsey.
25th July: The Devonian, Hemmerdon, Combe Fishacre (approaching Dainton tunnel).
1st Sept: The Scarborough Spa Express, Bolton Percy.
Not bad performances for a Class 7, I hope you'll agree. And she can go almost anywhere - at least, she's limited by axle-weight, rather than profile.
