6024's water carrier is air braked only.

    A lot of speculation but...
Isnt 5029 air braked ? (if not whats the air pump for on the side of it ?). Isnt 5029 owned by Mr Hosking ? who also owns 60019's 2nd water tender ?
Would this be a feasible adaption ?

5043's support crew were pretty tight lipped about this yesterday, but word on the street is that this job is definitely planned for 5043 and they are not using either of the current water carriers. Suggestions of the King one were dismissed out of hand, as it appears that Mr Meanley is not one of its greatest fans, and anyway its air brake only status would rule it out entirely, as would Bittern's second tender.

It will be interesting to see what type of vehicle they use. Could be cutting it fine though with getting it passed by the VAB etc by 17th April 2010.

Is it not possible to wait for official word. Or just wait for the surprise? Do we really have to speculate!!!!

Maybe it will be done like like planes in mid-air. Have a loco pulling a tank running parallel and pipe it across!

I remember some years back there were some Full Brakes(BGs) with strengthened floors.Could a BG be modified like that with a tank to spread out the load.I trhink a standard BG can have 10 tons evenly distributed so a beefed up on could take more?I may be wrong on those figures though,I have not got my coaching stock books to hand.
How heavy does 2500 gallons weigh??

"A pint of clear water weighs a pound and a quarter" hence a gallon weighs 10 lbs. Therefore 2500 gallons would be 25,000lbs which is 25000/2240tons = 11.16 tons

Then you have the weight of the tank and fittings so a round figure of 15 tons.Could a BG be strngthened? How much water is used between Bristol and Paddington?

I'm sure that the water issue was the first thing that was talked about when this trip was in the initial planning stages. And it must have been sorted out or the trip wouldn't be getting the publicity it is.
You'll all find out in 12 weeks and five days time. :biggrin1:

It's 118 miles via Bath, slightly more via Badminton, but on the return you are mainly running down hill. If you assume 40 gal/mile that's 4720 gal, plus a saftey margin of about 1000 gal you'll need circa 5,700 gals. Tornado does 106.5 miles to Grantham on one 6000 gal tender so that's a bench mark. Of couse you have many vairiables, East Coast Pacifics are a bit more efficient that GW locos but the load (we understand) will be 10 not 13 etc. So given the GW tender is 4000 gal I reckon you need to find circa 2000 gal capacity from somewhere.

They might just get a diesel and stick it on the back of course ...

5043 + Class 47 helping+ 10 vehicles made it from Tyseley (Birmingham) to South Ruislip (London) without water stops with this method (98 miles), and then 5043 still had enough left over to potter around Greenford to turn and run back into Marylebone.

I'm sure Tyseley wouldn't adopt this method. However, unless they're very good at keeping secrets, I don't know if this water carrier is going to materialise in 12 weeks...

Water, water, everywhere...and not a drop to drink!

Maybe they will just lob a hose into a passing canal?

Or they could save water by restricting the amount of tea served in the Pullmans!

If I'm not mistaken, the water scoop is missing from 5043............

I am sure there will be a water-carrier of some description. Maybe a team of orphans carrying 5 gallon jugs running next to the track!

Do you really believe that the water situation is only now being sorted, after the trip has been announced? :tape:

Well if tyseley can overhaul 4965 in twelve weeks then i would think a water carrier of some discription would be no problem!!
Are tyseley actually making it, or is some other organisation currently working on the Vehicle??

I'm sure that saltydog knows exactly what solution has been worked out at Tyseley (note :tape: icon) and is just enjoying reading all the speculation.
And why not? All will be revealed in the end.
