For those that are interested there is a Program on More 4 Titled Trains with Pete Waterman which looks at the Golden age of Steam in the 1920's and 30's with regard to speed. Makes a change to have something decent on Tele during the day. Its on at 12:35.

It's repeated quite often on Discovery Turbo for those with Sky, as well as Mark Williams on the rails

I knew it was several years old but having never seen it I enjoyed it. Don't have Sky and never will have.

Remember the series but not this one, thoroughly enjoyed it. Interesting to see the wrecks of Scots Guardsman and Britannia in the background at Crewe, two locos with very changed fortunes since the programme
    was filmed.

Freeview works just fine for me and if it doesnt you can get freesat instead.

I'm with A4SNG i refuse to pay for Sky to get all the things I used to get for my licence fee.

I'm with you there Simon - I refuse to be held to ransom. If there's some "must see" sports event then I'll go to the pub - any excuse (mind you, last time was when we won the rugby world cup!). We've had a Freeview digibox for about 7 years and no problems most of the time.

I'm a fairly satisfied Sky customer. Although the only thing that keeps me on Sky is the fact that they broadcast live Speedway from the British leagues and from the GPs and World Cup but my Sky box is on its way out.

Ring them up and tell that your box has packed up and that you are going to move to virgin because you can get the same service but they will give you a new box free of charge as a new subscriber. I know someone who did that and they gave them a free sky+ box to keep them.

I've gotta say I've been on freeview for over four years and it is great in my area, be even better when they switch the analogue off and digital can go full power.

BTW Ralph, Sky is digital they switched their analogue off eon's ago, and no, I'd never pay for television.

Ralph Whilst not wishing to offend here are my reasons for not having SKY

I have a digital aerial and freeview works fine for me never once had a problem with it. Besides I don't have to pay a subriscription and remember Sky is Quantity Television not Quality Televison well thats my view anyway.

Oh and one other thing it may well make you think again and is one of the reasons I won't have Sky.

Rupert Murdoch is a very clever man my hat goes off to him, but I am not going to line his pocket.

He charges companies to advertise on Sky then he has lots of people like you paying a monthly subriscription to watch the adverts, he can't lose. Now with my freeview box I don't mind the adverts in a way cause I am not paying out on a monthly basis to watch them. If they could guarantee no adverts at all and a lower monthly payment then I like many others may be tempted providing the programs were worth watching. However looking at what was on tv over Christmas I am glad I did not pay all that moeny out for what in my opinion was not worth it.

    Let the banter continue

I've got cable with Virgin Media, freeview in this area is rubbish sometimes you don't get a picture at all or it is all whishy washy looks like black and white, I am not the only one who is very displeased with freeview, anyhow I got a great deal from Virgin for combining my TV, phone and broadband together, got my TV package for free and a free cable box. Before freeview I only had the phone and broadband from them and was paying the same monthly subscription as I am now with the TV package. Anyhow I like the extra channels as I like the tennis which is on Eurosport and not on freeview.

I've been a very satisfied Freesat customer for some time now. One off payment for the box and you're away. No annoying drop outs that you can get with Freeview and the picture quality is far superior. Oh and the box does everything a sky plus box does, pause, rewind, record; and it receives BBC and ITV HD which is excellent. They have just also introduced BBC iplayer to the box, unfortunately due to my isolated location here my broadband connection isn't quick enough for video streaming, but i'm assured it works well in more civilised areas! I really wouldn't go anywhere near Sky now, it's a rip off, granted other systems have more channels but when do you have time to watch it all?? It's £ down the drain.

I'm glad to hear that Freeview is better in some areas and perhaps when they finally get round to increasing the power, it will be better here.
I do begrudge paying for my Sky and each year when it comes up for renewal I think about Freesat. I am certainly of going to look very seriously at it later this year.
I've just had a look at the Freesat web site and now remember why I had my doubts about it, they do very little sport and as a keen follower of motorsports of all types that's what i would miss...

in response to the above and if you like german railways invest a approx£250 or maybe less and get railway programmes regulary, almost daily, don't worry about the language, just enjoy the almost stunning picture quality for free.goodness knows what the pictue quality will be like when they go hd!i've recorded some cracking programmes over the past 5 years.even recorded in good old vhs, quality almost as good as the best tapes.they would make a superb collection to dvd.these put the bbc to shame with the quality of these german programmes.there's even a model railway program around 3 or 4 times a year!

Talking of railway TV pro-grammes I was going through some old VHS tapes of stuff I had recorded off the TV at the weekend and found "James May's Top Toys" pro-gramme filmed at the MHR with 73096 in use and James travelling on the footplate of 34016. I also found an ITV programme which I forgot I had taped called "The Train Set" featuring 92203 and David Shepherd on the G & WR amongst other things. Does anyone know if it's possible to get these titles on DVD?
