Does anyone know of any long term restoration project coming back into service this year I can only think that a Joffre may be near completion.

Elf at Leighton Buzzard should be returning to service this year.
Likewise Chaloner should be back in service by mid-summer, after a ten year boiler overhaul, in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its preservation at the beginning of September.

There is a slim chance that you might see a certain Linda by the end of the year.

As you didn't specify steam - there is a slim chance of Corris No.8 (Hunslet 4wDM 7274/1973) finally turning a wheel in anger this year.

By slim we're talking size 0. The loco is currently compared to an italian tank, practically everything is wrong or needs to be rebuilt.

We are very hopeful that our Fowler 0-4-2T "Saccharine" will be entering service on our March Enthusiasts Day.

For those that dont know its Fowler No.13355 of 1912.

It was supplied to a sugar plantation at Mount Edgecombe in South Africa.

It was brought back in 1978 when it worked on the Alford Valley Railway in Aberdeenshire.

It was then bought for the abortive Keilder Valley project and when that stallled we aquired the loco in October 2008.

Restoration started early last year and is very well progressed.

    Thanks

Just out of interest, is Linda ahead of or behind Mountaineer in the overhaul queue?

Given that Mountaineer is gathering dust at Glan-y-pwll and Linda is being worked on at Boston Lodge I would say Linda.

So far the boiler is complete having passed its hydraulic test and is in the frames clad and painted. A new smoke box is part constructed and new superheater elements have been delivered and fitted. On the mechanical side the pony truck has been overhauled and refitted along with its equalising gear. Worn areas of the frames have been built up and ground back. The driving wheels have been re-profiled, axel boxes re-metalled and machined and the horns trued up so the loco is back on its wheels for the first time in years. The saddle tank has been painted internally and should survive another 10 years at least. The focus is currently on the motion as well as the many other small components and the tender will need a fair amount of work.

The work is being done almost entirely by volunteers, there's no real pressure to finish the loco so the opportunity is being taken to go over it with a fine tooth comb. Coal firing is not out of the question and the lempor will not be replaced also efforts are being made to remove some of the awful modifications made in its FR years.

So with only three working engines for most of the year, is there any chance of a visitor? Perhaps for the gala? Been ages since there was a visiting loco, 1995 iirc.

There is also an equal chance of the Moseley one appearing too! Both locos are planned to be in as near original condition as possible - the oldest & youngest Joffre survivors.

I'm a bit out of the loop! Thanks for that. Am I right in thinking Blance has another five years on her ticket? Is there any time-scale at all for the overhaul of Mountaineer? I hope it doesn't gather dust for too much longer. Probably my favourite NG loco.

There are no upto date weblinks of the locos current status, but you have http://www.joffre.org.uk/ & http://www.mrt.org.uk/joffre/

Both loco's boilers are currently being overhauled & well progressed. Both chassis are near complete - just lots of other bits required for each machine!
