Thats nice shot from Jake, I have just seen a similar picture from there taken by a guy called Jeff Nichols, so he must have been standing almost next to you..

Great shot Austin, I had a look at that location a couple of days ago but decided not to turn out this morning, Thelwall viaduct was it's usual chaotic self and I didn't fancy sitting in a jam and then missing the shot.

    Tornado steams into Manchester's MOSI

Today, the newly built A1 Pacific No 60163 Tornado paid its first visit to my home city of Salford, en route for another city nearby. It was hauling the Royal Train, carrying Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall to the oldest railway station in the world, Liverpool Road, Manchester. This is now the site of the Museum of Science and Industry, the venue for Prince Charles' first engagement. I first saw it pass through Patricroft station near Eccles. Much later, when the visitors had departed, the general public were allowed into the museum to see Tornado before it left.

According to the BBC website 'the Tornado' 'was rebuilt from a 1948 design'.

They make it sound like they just fixed it up.

I was tempted to go and have a looksee, but I'm due to spend a day with Tornado soon on the Cumbrian coast. Sounds like Charles and Dobbin had a nice day out.

Only saw the afternoon run at Leyland station. Anyone know why the whole train was dragged back to Preston rather than stabled/serviced in Manchester? Any news of Charlie or the missus on the footplate during the morning trip?

My video at Goostry now uploaded, I was caught out by two things, there was more than the usual one headlight, should have realised that this train carries several, and also she was coming very quietly, 'proper' pacifics can be heard pounding away before they come into view......
And then there was the thingy that came the other way..

Thanks Brian, yes it was quiet there, one guy on my side who only stopped to watch because he saw me with my camera and asked if there was anything special coming, and that one on the other platform who gets up for a look after she has gone past.

Wassup Ralph - not used to good efficient pacifics that don't make a great show about doing the job!

Pictures on Pprune or the ELR Forum, where you don't get charged for participating

Magic day - and if the Tornado guys get going on the project their chief engineer was describing - "I'm in!"

I did try Stuart but I was told some bloke called Charles had snapped up the last table for two in posh class.

Nice vids and pics everyone and thanks for sharing them. After my quick trip to Astley this morning I had to do the late shift so didn't get a chance to see the return to Manchester and the run via Stockport. It will probably be tomorrow evening before I sort out my video as I am back on shift at 7.30 in the morning.

I must agree Tornado is very quiet as to exhaust beat even when accelerating as on Austins video linked in post 21 of this thread.

    Neil.

some good pictures here folks :)

I found (and joined!) this forum last night when trying to find some times for todays running, arrived at leyland just after 9 to find it had already gone! If that wasn't sickening enough I now see it came through again later! Is there something I'm missing as I can't find details of that run anywhere but enough of you guys were clued up?!

    Thanks Ian

If you're referring to the lack of a lamp on the top bracket, I don't think CHarles gets one of those until he's promoted to the top job!
