The best thing to come out of Royal Scot's 'restoration' is the release of several of Bressingham's road steam collection.

Sorry but you sem to be confusing someone asking questions with being venomous, not so, however as you ask, lets have some facts; you said it was 80% dismantled when it arrived. Mr fish said it was 50% completed when it left, Crewe LNWR said its driving wheels were not aligned (amongst other issues) when it was 'restored' (and had Bob Meanley verify this) - the budget was exceeded to the point that Barclays bank put a lein on it. Not a pretty picture is it, or perhaps you could detail that it is in fact all 100% OK , that none of these points are true, in which case I will apologise unreservedly.

Viewed from a distance, he doesn't seem to be the only one. Rather ironically it appears that Martello came within both timescale and budget.

So would 6100 had it stayed at BSM as VOLUNTEERS would have done the work.

OK, I'm confused here. Before she went to Crewe, she'd already worked at Llangollen and WSR galas hadn't she? So are you saying Southall released her to those galas in "not in a finished state?"

There's none so blind as will not see...

Had the lottery funding requirements been stuck to, the volunteers, led by a competant project manager, would have done the work, including the boiler (there was a Lloyds registered boiler maker on site at the time), which would have save 1000's. (I believe the quote for the boiler work DOUBLED when it got to chatham).

Search on youtube for the videos and listen to the valve timing, and notice all the steam leaks - especially from the middle cylinder

She went to Crewe from Southall before the WSR gala. Also, don't forget the damage to the middle cylinder caused by the low loader fire on the way from Crewe to the WSR.

Generally, a quote is not given for heavy boiler work. An estimate will have been given initially. You never know what is going to be found, especially once the foundation ring is removed from the firebox.

You can tell if the tubeplates knackered or not!

I quite agree, but are you trying to say that the condition of the tubeplates was deemed as O.K. at Bressingham and Chatham said that work/replacement was required? Please remember that you can't mess about with a boiler. It must be overhauled to the required standards.

Not always, it depends on why it is deemed knackered, if it is cracked you may not find that until a full exam is undertaken, a visual external exam may not show everything, if the tubes are still fitted and for what ever reason can not be removed you have to estimate what will be required. Wastage on the smokebox side of the plate is one of hte common issuea, this can be seen normally, however I do not know why this boiler is an issue as I have not been involved.

After 84 pages of speculation and drivel I'm left wondering, after 6100 finally proves her worth on the mainline, which will be the next project that proves more difficult and expensive than was envisaged, will you people pick on next?
Those who can, get on with it, those who can't wave their arms about and make a lot of noise.

Well said. I do wonder how many of 6100's detractors have ever got their hands dirty on a restoration/overhaul project. Steam locos have a nasty habit of turning round and biting you whether they be in traffic or under overhaul and as someone once said, "those who have never made a mistake have never made anything" or some such words.
