Sundays from 14th February to 20th March 2010 will see a steam service on the Esk Valley branch between Whitby and Battersby Junction for the first time since the 1960s. Sunday services at this time of the year have been rare enough over the intervening years.

The services will be in the hands of 30926 Repton and 76079. Times at:

    http://www.nymr.co.uk/timetables-and-fares/timetable/

    Click on Sunday.

I can recommend this.Went up after Christmas and had Repton on four.Line speed is better than the NYMR line from Grosmont to Battersby with 45mph permissable in places.Well worth the effort especially with Repton as you will probably not get it as fast or faster anywhere else.It is not passed for running elsewhere on the National network. The running fits in between preserved and Main Line.A good experience.

I thought all NYMR services on the Esk valley were limited to 25mph these days to avoid central locking issues (ie to cut back on the stewards and therefore staffing requirements). Has this changed?

The service between Grosmont and Whitby are usually limited to 25mph Pete - the maximum speed on this section is only 3-mph anyway.

When running to Battersby, to keep reasonable journey times, the doors are fully stewarded and the line speeds of up to 45mph can be run to.
