I noticed that as well - also audible on my vid. I heard them later in the day dragging and being slow to release.

Well you would go round using these funny Crewe devices with 21' of Vac *runs for cover*

Cheers for the compliment Ralph, though they don't really compare wth some of the vids and pics already posted.

On the contrary, he must be the luckiest guy alive, in all cases the loco just passed him before Richard Branson had his say in the proceedings! Going on the opposite side on such a busy line is just asking for trouble. As we went along in our coach, the numbers of people who were "bowled" by Pendolinos was incredible! Three times people were even bowled by freight trains! From our point of view on the train we found it hilarious of course, but its not so funny when you're in their position!

Yes lucky in that he got a part shot, but even so, I would be upset to have it happen more than once in the same day.
I do remember seeing one gallery of at least 40 people who vanished behind the overtaking Pendo as we approached........

Problem is that some people have no idea what steam was actually doing in everyday service back in the "heyday". There are for instance, in John Powells "Stanier Pacifics at work" several runs with Princess Royal Pacifics on the Royal Scot from Euston to Crewe (Page 24 if anyone has the book). These are obviously runs selected to show what the loco's could do, and run 3 is with the great Laurie Earl of Camden shed with a load of 493 tons - 54 tons less than Saturday's load of 547 tons. In particular towards the later stages of this run engine 6212 passes Tamworth at 66 mph and then runs the subsequent 48 miles pass to pass at Crewe in 45 minutes. On Saturday evening 6201 covered this same stretch start to stop at Crewe south 47 miles in 47 minutes, which most reasonable people would consider at least comparable and probably better than the 1938 run with 6212 given the 11% overload which 6201 was contending with. The fireman told me that much of the work was done on around 10% cut off and full regulator at max boiler pressure, and certainly the safety valves blowing off at every easing seem to indicate the truth of this claim. How anyone can accuse such work as ambling along, I am not quite sure, but it does seem to indicate a certain lack of understanding of the realities of what steam really did in everyday service.

Sorry PJH liners a bit more study is required. If you want Pendolino times there is only one place to get them, and it's not on a steam train.

Well said that man. Non better than Laurie Earl, "The little man who loved speed!" That was the realities of everyday steam back in the day and we came very close to that indeed. Who'd have thought that in 2010 we could do the WCML with a "Lizzie" on a representative load - I still pinch myself to see if I'm awake! Superb.

To put times and speeds into perspective, in the late 50's my brother regularly used to travel from Euston to Crewe and often on the Royal Highlander. This was usually hauled by a Princess with had 13 on. Leaving at 7.20pm its scheduled time in Crewe was 10.20, with only one stop, an average speed of some 53mph. He often timed between stations and Bletchley was always about on hour out. Averages between other stations was usually in the low 60's and he is sure that running in excess of 70mph was very rare. However apart from slacks through various stations there was little else to hinder progress, so taking out all the stops we had on saturday, the actual running compared very favourably with the 50's.

Is it not a case that people often think of the 'Big name' crack expresses that ran with 6-8 carriages behind a class 7 or 8 and therefore were fast and forget that 99% of the trains that larger locos hauled were in fact long heavy trains?

Looked and sounded fantastic through Harrow, although I got the impression that the smoke seemed to like hugging the smokebox, seemed very drifty, but assume it wasn't the case really?
