Maybe, a nice idea, I would have thought for two or more locos it would be good but an uneducated guess would say a loco and path would cost the same as a low loader?

Can't wait to see the T9 running, a wonderful looking locomotive.

It will be nice to attend the LSWR gala on the BWR, with the current line-up of Beattie 0298, Drummond M7 and the T9. About time the LSWR became the focus for a gala...

I daydream about a Southern Railway "Plandampf" on the Exeter-Barnstaple line, with the 5 locos mentioned by B P and m b above.

    But unfortunately, :flypig:

Well, coincidentally, I've already mulled this over over a pint with another member of NatPres after 6201's run on Saturday! It would be an Atlantic Coast Express sort of thing, where 34067 would haul the train as far as Yeovil Junction, and 34046 would take you on to Exeter St. David's, where you have the option of exploring the city or joining another trip (limited places) for a bit extra as far as Okehampton. This would involve seeing the T9 back on the mainline to do that leg. On the return to Exeter St. David's, 34046 will take you back to Yeovil Junction, and 34067 will take you back to London. Now just to sort all the logistical problems and the small matter of costing the whole venture!

If 30120 could go main line what would her maximun speed be under NR rules? and how many coaches would she be allowed to pull?

    Thanks

31806 is expected back later this year or early next year, so dont rule it out ,
um wadebridge piloted by 30120 and 31806 on a mixed freight ,or better one of the beattie well tanks on the freight, M7 on locals and take your choice on 31806, 30120 and wadebridge on passinger and rename the stations to the former stations on the southern padstow line

probally 60mph and i am not sure what the max trailing load would be but now that the cylinder has been done i should imagine something like 7 or 8 mk 1s , what did the M7 manage

Not sure of the axle weight, but IIRC (and Martin Butler/Chessie/any other long-standing MHR footplatemen may have more of an idea than me) the Mid-Hants thought it was likely to have issues on their 1 in 60 given the high-stepping nature of them (6'7" drivers, again if I remember correctly), but were pleasantly surprised by its capabilities.

As I said previously, there's certainly a couple of drivers down at Bodmin who I'm sure won't have too many problems with it, even on their 1 in 40ish.

well i cant recall the t9 slipping on the 1 in 60 or having trouble with rail head conditions i never got on her when she was in steam so i cant say from a crews point of view , she mostly ran with 3 or 4 coaches and always seemed to romp up the bank and she appeared to be a good steamer but others are better placed than me to tell what a t9 can do

I can remember, on a hot Summers day, in the Mid 1980's when the Mid-Hants had just extended from Ropley to Medstead & Four Marks the T9 giving severe problems with hauling its train from Arlesford to Medstead & Four Marks!

it might have been the time the piston glands blew and if its the day i think it was, they ended up double heading it with the N class , i i had several very good runs behind the old girl and i knew she was very well liked by the railway

I had the pleasure of driving and firing the T9 at Swanage quite a few years ago. A Lovely engine, although i seem to remember that the water valves for the injectors were at floor level and were operated with a good kick!
Also when we had it the spear end of one of the superheaters split - made trying to keep steam an interesting experience!

30053 was a 45mph loco on the mainline and generally ran with a maximum of 4 Mk1s.

A t9 is a 3P compared to a 2/1P for an M7. So 2/3 coaches more for a T9. I dont think i could find regular employment on the mainline though.

  18. I cant see this old lady being alloued onto network rail metals because of her age it would be another city of truro

In my firing days at Ropley I had the plesure of the T9 on Alresford to Alton workings with 5 on ! . Tender first up through Hampshire Hunt bridge was always interesting coming out of Alton as are the cuttings at Soldridge approaching Medstead from Ropley ,Usualy she ran with 3 or 4 including an RMB .
I have been told the story of the S160 and WD 2.10.0 double heading a fireworks special at 10pm on a cold and frosty night getting stuck and thats a total of 16F !!.
I did the same working the following year with the Class 25 and 27 in multiple .
