Anthony is now contributing to another forum and the useful information he is able to give appears lost to this forum - forever. I only hope 46236 is proud of his achievements.

The other problem is that I (and no doubt many other Men) "get away" with a visit to the NRM by having a day out in York and while SWMBO visits the shops etc. I go to the NRM.

With Shildon this option is not available. How would you sell a day trip to Shildon? Difficult to get to , Nice Museum located (sorry , in advance, to those in the North East that this upsets) in an area that is at best somewhat depressed. Not a tourist area and nothing for the non rail enthusiast members of the Family to do?

I would have thought moving "Mallard" to the Peter Allen building while the Great Hall is renovated (again!!) would have been a better idea.

This being said the earlier, nasty, personal comments which appear to have lead Anthony to remove himself from this forum were totally inexcusable.

If its shopping your after then drop the Mrs off at Durham its just a few miles up the road, its also got a cathedral and a river for those that can only visit cities with rivers.

Moving Mallard into the Peter Alan build would present another set of problems, isn't it full of old wooden bodied royal coaches and wagons, getting these out and across the mainline that now has wires up would be logistical problem in itself. Much better to send it to Shildon, and your Mrs gets to see a different city and a different set of shops, just think of the brownie points you could earn by taking her somewhere different his year.

Actually, I quite like the NRM's idea of moving things around, whether to outstations or on loan! a bit of variety never hurts, and helps make items available to a wider range of visitors. Unchanging displays bring the "boring - been there, seen that, got the mug/badge/t-shirt" response from many people. A what's new now or planned for the future policy brings return visits.

One downside to this is that I no longer get e-mail notification that I have a message waiting after one of the many upgrades , so if Anthony is the same then unless he logs on he will never know

Learning that Shildons only an hour by rail from York means I may well visit there anyway as I'm half an hour from York as it is.

Regarding the decision although I may take the view Mallard is best at York this is only from childhood memories of the place and remembering Mallard being there I think it is a good idea that things are moved around.

Like others have mentioned I have always read with interest articles Anthony has put into the forum.

    Regards

    Duncan

Martin, if you go into Settings>General Settings it should give you various options under the Messaging and Notifications section.

The thing I like most about the Railway Museum at York is that it feels like a train station and you feel as if you have been transported back in time.
It makes you feel like the trains are in their own environment and not just in a giant storage facility.
it feels like this because it is in a great railway city.
It will be a shame if they lose that, and if they tamper with it too much they will and when it is gone it will never come back and once again something will have been spoilt for the sake of rushing to the future.
Unfortunately Shildon feels like a giant storage facility and while I would gladly go back to York (if it stays the same as it is now, although getting rid of Mallard makes it less attractive) I would not go back to Shildon.
    That is my opinion anyway.

What is the situation on this piece of equipment anyway, is it redundant, is it sold, is it any use for mainliners or, as mentioned elsewhere, shuttles on the Darlington-Stanhope line?
Go on tell me it is impractical, so were a lot of other things a while ago!

It's a 50' table, iirc. Goodness knows when it was last used, & the connections to it are long gone anyway.

Mentioned on another thread that Mallard is Unlikely to ever steam again... is this:
    Just someones opinion ?
    NRM Policy ?
Due to the poor condition of the loco under the nice paintwork ?

If a Scotsman style reconditioning was needed then one can see why this Icon is not likely to be steamed for the sake of it, but
one would think that to celebrate its record breaking Centenery the old girl should be Fettled up, steamed and allowed to gallop down stoke bank at 100mph ( a one off derog.?) one last time... in 2038 ?
