I thought this would be a good idea for a thread - just somewhere to say what railway you visited today and say something about a railway which maybe doesn't have a thread of its own elsewhere. What was running, did you ride, did you photo etc.

Today I walked to Cheltenham Racecourse station (it's about thirty minutes from me on foot) and rode the GWSR for the first time. Very enjoyable! 5542 was the steam loco out.

I didn't visit a heritage railway today, unfortunately as it was the first pleasant day weatherwise for, well, months. However, a heritage locomotive visited us so all I had to do was take a 10 min walk to the ECML and wait for, running 30 mins late, No 70013, Oliver Cromwell. Very nice!

Left 0655 to volunteer at SVR at Bridgnorth satation, painting spear-top railings. Watched 43106, 4566 and, I think, 7802?

That's an intriguing statement in itself. 30 minutes away on foot and yet it is your first ride!!

I was up at Swanage today during the members weekend. A great chance to look behind the scenes and work out how I might be able to help.

Good fun, learnt a fair bit and had a go at pulling off some of the signals for the M7 (which was giving brake van rides around the station), had a look around Manston's cab (it's damn hot in there!) and an interesting nose around a newly restored Bullied coach in the carriage works. Then a trip down to Norden and a nose around looking for vantage points ready for the diesel gala in May.

I can heartily recommend the fare at the Bird's Nest Buffet on the station, too. :)

Jark 91, Glad you enjoyed your trip behind '42. (any pics on your site?) You must visit again soon, or perhaps lend a hand?

I, for my sins, was on an 'Awayday' to 'the smoke' researching ways to help us progress the restoration of Auto 169 more easily and efficiently. Whether we were sucessful or not will be seen in a few months.

    cheers,

    John

Well I've only been living in Cheltenham since September as I'm at uni here but I can't tell you why I haven't explored the railway until now! It was just a nice day, I was up early for a change and thought 'why not?'.

No pics sadly as I only had my phone with me and the camera on it isn't much cop! I'd definitely consider volunteering on the GWSR though, but probably not until september as I'm going home for the summer next week. I'd need to find a way of getting to Toddington too since I don't drive.

According to Transport Direct, there is a bus arriving at 10:35 and leaving at 17:28 (except Sundays). I don't know the GWSR, but in most places that at least lets one do maintenance.

Last Saturday, 13th March i made my first visit to the SVR for some 30 years, so you could say it was my first visit... shame on me..
Anyway arriving at Kidderminster by train from Crewe via Galton Bridge, I was impressed by the general appearance on the station, I was also impressed by the array of beers available in the bar, and the food in the cafe. The trip to Bridgnorth was a pleasant run and again the waiter service to your compartment of drinks and snacks was most acceptable. Another fine selection in the bar at Bridgnorth before back on the train for the return journey. More service at your seat on the way back.

One slight drawback was the sight of GW locos in including the one out our train, but I suppose considering the location you have to allow for one or two minor irritations..

So a very pleasant afternoon out.

Note the remark about GW locos was perhaps a little tongue in cheek....

Ralph - you should come more often - you never know the GW locos might just grow on you!!!
