Saltydog is correct. As a member of 5029's crew I have to remain extremely tight-lipped about such things. Some people may not like this but confidential info is and will remain confidential. All will be revealed soon...

Hmmm... it's GWR 175 year, it's nearly 1st April, we were recently discussing the so-called "streamlined" castles, Bob's merry men now have certain skills in large-scale panel-beating... who else is thinking what I'm thinking?

I hope that anyone in the Tyseley area shortly before press-date of The Beano will keep their camera with them, just in case...

A streamlined Castle would simply be a good example of how *not* to do it and proof that where streamling was concerned, Gresley Was Right. :)

Mr Bulleid's wonderful Pacifics are "air smoothed" sir, not streamlined. :)

Due to on-track issues (e.g. visibility for footplate crew) and cost of maintenance, air-smoothing and streamlining was discontinued and, as we know, in most cases reversed.
Except in the case of the A4. Visibility was not a problem, and Streaks were shown to offer a 10% power saving at equal performance levels to other LNER Pacifics. Indeed, a problematic semi-streamlined class, the P2, was even converted to the same design (though the couple of B17s that got the treatment were done just for marketing reasons, I think).

'Carriage washer friendly' is the term i prefer ;)

The stat about A4's 10% power saving, is that with or without a Double Kylchap ?.

IIRC the first power saving calculations were done with the original batch of A4s, if not at the design stage in wind tunnel tests, which would have had single chimneys at the time.

It might apply to an A4 as light engine, but for a 10% reduction on a complete train I think you'd need the original stock too, with the faired-in gangways and side skirts too plus the shared bogies to reduce wind and rolling resistance to a minimum.

a streamlined castle is something ive got to see. Even if i am a southern fan, a castle like that will just be a right laugh.

That week at salisbury, they will have had a normal one and a streamlined one, 5043 on saturday and 5029 on the weekday.

So the fact that the URL contains the words "Steamlined Castle April 1st spoof" doesn't ring any alarm bells?

Ah, but the labelling of the article as a spoof could be a spoof in itself. :D

Anyone who wants to know the truth should make a point of being out and about when 5029 makes her first mainline appearance of the year.
Whilst at work today I took some photo's of 5029.......purely for my personal album you understand!!!!
