I have one of these prints, but of 34059, they are of extremely good quality and detail.

As mentioned earlier, I have one of 34053. Once I've finished paying for my share in 34053, I think I'll invest in 34072, as it was the first unrebuilt Bulleid I had ever seen in steam.

As we've already got both originals for 34081 it has to be Biggin Hill.

I'd buy two, Blandford Forum and Mortehoe, to go with the Flanders and Swann song

Is there a story behind acquiring both the original plates? Or were the plates somehow available when it was bought from Barry?

34100 Appledore. A very picturesque name... I've also got a thing about 34012 Launceston.

Was that name ever proposed? I understood that West Country locations were all in Dorset or west thereof, and in those days Bournemouth was in Hampshire.

Not quite right. Salisbury and Wilton are in Wiltshire.

I think I would go for Biggin Hill (I live a couple of miles away) or fighter command

No I don't thinks so, a few of us back in the early 90's toyed with idea of having 34111 smokebox plate made and 'Bournemouth' & 'Eastliegh' w/c nameplates made up... one or both of 34016 and 34105 were planned to carry them on April 1st...

As my original reply seems to have got lost in the ether here we go again.
On withdrawal all the surviving squadrons were given the plates and crests off their namesake locos. In the case of squadrons that had been disbanded, one set went to the RAF Museum and the other was sold. 92 Squadron were very much in business when 34081 was withdrawn so both sets ended up with the squadron. When the loco was purchased from Barry and we'd proved to the Squadron we meant business, one set was presented to the Society - shipped across from Germany in a transport aircraft and then delivered to Staverton Airport in a Spitfire (good to have friends in high places). When 92 Squadron was disbanded as a flying unit the Squadron boss appointed us as official custodians of the second set. Because of the value of them we have only ever carried replicas on the locos. Now that 92 Squadron is back in business, albeit as a ground unit, there is the chance that one set will return to them but their offices are a tad smaller than the crew rooms of old and there's not a lot of wall space to display large items so there is a distinct possibility we'll remain custodians of both sets for the time being.
As an aside, we also managed to track down the original smokebox number plate too

IIRC they were named after locations on the Southern network, so I'd say Trevone by a whisker from Padstow?

Correct! I wonder why they picked Trevone for a name, it was not really much of a place, there must have been better candidates?
