Steam railway Magazine (issue 366, 21 August 2009) includes an article about the 762 Club, and the project to build a replica LYN. the project website has also been updated.

The LYN Project website - 762club.com - now has an RSS feed.

Updates are likely to be approximately monthly, and more frequently as the project develops.

Lyn has wheels - well patterns at least. These were on show at the L&B Autumn Gala. Pictures on the The 762 Club website

Quick update on funding: the website now shows that virtually a third of the shares have now been sold - together with many sponsored parts.

Weren't a third sold last time you updated? Or was it a quater?

I'd buy shares if they weren't so bloody expensive

    'Twas a quarter last time!
Check the sponsorship pages - there are items for just a few quid!
For example: 14 quid for a boiler stay; 15 for a cab roof board, and 25 for a boiler tube.

If Lyn is to be completed for 2012 as stated on the project website, I presume that orders are imminent for some of the large components - for example, the boiler - any news? 2012 is only 2 years away!

  11. i would of thought that the boiler would of been orderd allready as most boilerworks have a minimum year waiting list is the boiler going to be welded up or rivitted im not ofay with the origional loco

Exciting stuff, Lyn and a Manning Wardle by 2012? A complete heritage train on the L&B? Can dreams really come true?

In other news, how comes the L&B isn't getting the same sort of over the top financial support that the WHR got? I feel the WHR has no more merit to deserve the money then the L&B does?

    Cue fight...

Because Devon is perceived as being far more prosperous as North Wales, and therefore less deserving of significant grant funding.

I'd argue the biggest reasons for the difference in funding are down to timing (the Millenium Commission grant), location (Welsh Assembly money), plus the significant involvement of the FR and the experience it has when it comes to rebuilding, constructing and running a similar railway in Snowdonia, plus its large membership including several very wealthy donors. While the aim of rebuilding a long-lost railway is the same, and so is the gauge, the differences between the two projects are vast.

I appreciate that, but I can't help but feel that whilst Wales is rife with narrow gauge history, England's narrow gauge heritage is being forgotten, nearly non-existant, and therefore merits as much investment as the WHR. I am not critisising the WHR, which is a beautiful piece of work, but the history of England's excentric, grand narrow gauge railways, of which the L&B is the most famous, isn't being preserved despite the proven high economic and historical value of it. Would just like to see some investment from CG or the EU to preserve what is England's railway heritage.

Then you must go out and lobby for it. The Welsh Highland was successful in obtaining funds, from various sources, because of the hard work of those who went looking for it.

Chris, the Welsh Highland wasnt given grants because of its history but because of the strength of the business plan and the benefits it could provide to the local area; saying that one countries NG history is more neglected so should get the money instead is irrelevant when said money came from sources which arent open to the L&B. Quite rightly, such projects are judged on their own merits and its up to the L&B to show that their plan is desirable and deliverable and hope they can find a source of funds.

    Chris,

I know I know, all I meant was that the L&B deserves some support, irregardless of business plans, location etc, I know life isn't that simple though!

Going back to Lyn, there hasn't actually been much news of construction recently - the last I remember was the casting of the wheels and that was ages ago. If the loco is to be finished in 2012 there must have been some progress since then - any chance of an update?
