A provisional move on the 23rd June has been planned - according to uksteam.info - from York to Shildon with 60163 leading with 4468, dead in tow

yeah, it's d.i.t. not double headed.

would be good to see Mallard restored though at some point.

The NRM has had enough of a headache with 4472, I highly doubt that 4468 will ever run in the next 30 years at least. 4472's heavy overhaul has cost over a million, and Mallard has been out of service for over 20 years now, so there must be a lot of work to be done on it.

The NRM is in a tricky position when it comes to engines; because they are a museum visitors arrive expecting to see locos such as Mallard and Flying Scotsman, as often they're the only trains they know about, and I have seen visitors disappointed that the locos are not there when they visit.

Though surely Mallard must steam for the 100th anniversary in 2038, a good distance away, and plenty of time for funds to be raised. Any donations anyone?

I would almost bet my house on a Steam Railway appeal starting in 2033 for 4468

You'll need to start a bit earlier than that, after all Flying Scotsman has been in the works now for how long? I think the repairs to 4468 would be much more comprehensive. Anyway, the NRM is not got at predicted when overhauls will be complete as we know; "4472 returns in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011...?"

Campainr-I may be wrong, and I'm very aware that there are people on this forum who definitely do know what they're talking about... But surely the fact that 4468 hasn't steamed for 20years doesn't neccesarily mean that it would require any more work than if it had come out of service recently. I'm sure the loco has been looked after very well, and I'd be surprised if time has caused any deterioration at all. Of course it could have been knackered last time it steamed and has remained knackered since! But I don't think that time would have to make any difference per se...

You are quite right Dan,not many locomotives live in a temperature controlled environment, even if it isn't than it is still a very warm environment . I hope it does steam some time soon as there will be many people that have'nt ever seen it is steam, obviously I don't know it's boiler or mechanical state. These days there is a chance for some of the restoration costs to be repaid with paid visits to heritage railways and main line tours which perhaps there wasn'nt when it last steamed Perhaps Steam Railway magazine might start an appeal some day? regards,Tim (A)

Will Mallard have its rods on, or will they be removed to prevent wear to the cylinders that will not get the same lubrication as there is no steam?

    TonyMay,

I think that you'll find that 'Mallard' is restored. Something like 80150 shows an unrestored locomotive.

Hmmm, i highly doubt it will run with its motion down, this will put the wheels well out of ballance and will cause hammerblow to the track, causing unwanted damage to both the loco and the track. There was a case around the end of steam where a driver took a dead engine with no rods along a strectch of track thats around 30 miles long. When they went passed a signal box the windows shattered, The reason they shattered was due to the chair being smashed!! Pretty much every chair had to be replaiced along the section of line that the consist went over!!! Mallard will either be d.i.t with it motion up, or this post is all a load of bollacks.

35005 and 41312 went to Eastleigh 100 last year with rods off. So I can't see why Mallard can't be moved with rods off?

last time I visited to see the streamlined beauty, a man with an australian accent asked me if I knew where flying scotsman was, I told him its in bits at the moment, having just spied the cab sat on the track outside a shed through a small window in a locked door, he grunted and walked away muttering.

Mallard is in need of an overhaul not a restoration. There is a difference, as previously posted.

I believe that in the other 4468 thread it is eluded to that the bottom end was done quite thoroughly but the boiler less so.
