6024 has just departed Bishops Lydeard tender first to Minehead. From my knowledge, 6024 turns at Minehead ready to run tender first back to Bishops Lydeard !! Is this correct? <BJ>

Turns at Minehead through 180deg. so will still be tender first on the 1600 departure, presumably just a demonstration turn

A demonstration turn would surely be 360 degrees. This year we celebrate the 175th year of the Great Western Railway and the West Somerset Railway have a Great Western Railway 'King' class locomotive running tender first into Minehead and back out again. When the triangle is in regular use at Norton Fitzwarren there will be no need for locomotives to run smokebox first ever again. <BJ>

How can it turn 180 degree's and be TF on the 1600 from BL ? either 360 or 0 by my reckoning to be finishing the day pointing the same way as it started, what way is 6024 pointing now ?

I'd hope the WSR isn't daft enough to have a loco going backwards all day.

Judging by the webcams it is pointing towards MH and was 1600 off MH.

I'm going tomorrow, can't wait. May also go on Thurs weather dependant.

Also - can anyone tell me when Castle Hill is best? Morning or afternoon? The WSR is a line I have rarely visited.

Re my original post, you are quite correct, I was having a senior moment, it was not a demonstration turn!!

Not looking quite so promising for next weekend when The Mighty Kings and I will be there! But fingers crossed!

WSW - been keeping an eye on things with the Minehead Webcam - would be nice if engines waiting for their next turn after servicing could be brought down nearer the stops to make viewing more interesting.

Went yesterday and had a fantastic day out, despite the weather. Lots of two-cylinder action from the Standards, the 'Duke' was performing well (apart from a few uncomfortable stops when braking) and Braunton was highly vocal on the 13:00 ex-Minehead, to the extent that I'd say she was the best performer of the day, followed by 80104. 92212 looked the business on the turntable with her BR1F tender, and it was nice to see David Shepherd on the footplate of 92203. The vintage bus from Taunton station was also a great way to start the day, and it was hilarious that our Crosville bus was heading to Llandudno! The timetable was particularly excellent, and everything ran to time. Shame 78019 was not on service trains, though...

Had the good fortune to have bright Sunny spells early on and everything facing the right way first time it was sighted, very nice Spring gala, well done WSR!.

A lovely set of photos, although I guess the purist inside me doesn't like those post-preservation crests on Braunton but I guess they can be Photoshopped out.

I felt the same until I saw the effort that had gone into them and compared with those of 34007 Wadebridge. I haven't seen any pictures of her in unrebuilt form recently, but if there is a particularly wide space between the nameplate and class scroll, then there was the intention to bestow a crest at some point when built. Quite a few Bulleids were intended to have crests, yet were destined not to feature them. Take 34041 Wilton, for instance.

    Re 34046 Crest

    David and Bulleid Pacific,

At the time of the namings, a request was sent by the SR to Braunton Council stating the intention for the loco to run with a crest and for them to send the design. A naming ceremony would then follow (including 34093 Saunton) at either Braunton or Barnstaple. However, no reply was received and the loco was named at Eastleigh without ceremony.

The crest now carried was designed in 1964 by a local man, a Mr Dymond and is carried upon the Mayoral chain of Office of Braunton. I became aware of it whilst we had a 34046 exhibition board on display at Braunton Museum in 2003, to raise awareness of the restoration within the local community. Subsequently we gained permission from the Parish Council to use it. Jeremy Hosking had no problems with that so we had it made up. It is mounted on a two-part backplate and is removable. Mr Dymond's wife attended the launch ceremony in Sept 2008.

    cheers
    Keith
