It is the flue tubes that are machine welded down there length and this is the problem . The bottle ends are welded by a coded welder and then subjected to ultrasonic testing.

What is the perceived problem with this? Is there evidence of welded tubes being problematic / dangerous?

Are these dates confirmed. I have never travelled behind the Duke on the mainline due to previous cancellations therefore I am keen to book one or two Torbays with her.
6024 is the engine shown on these dates on UKsteam info.

    All the best

I would like to clear up a point, and I have this on good authority, Tornado does not have welded flue tubes, so there are no issues with the loco in this area.

The Guidance issued by HMRI (The management of steam locomotive boilers - second edition) for both small tubes and flue tubes allows for either solid drawn or ERW tubes so there should be no problem in fitting them. It is probably down to one or two persons opinion/prejudice that the perceived problem arises.

Welding of bottle ends is vastly different to the weld of an ERW tube, though. To compare the two is not relevant.

Yes, I know, the website says so but where did 5944 get these dates from. Was it speculation or does 5944 have some insider knowledge.

Have there been any notable failures of welded flue tubes?

The website says the Duke will be returning to the East Lancs week commencing the 5/4 engine and support coach but no mention on UK steam.

Does anybody know where the Duke currently resides? Previous question seems to have gone unanswered for a while.

    Thanks, Bill.

I take it 71000 will go to Bristol, then up the Marches through Shrewsbury and Crewe to Bury?
