Fireman shovelling coal forward in the tender, never, that's one of the support crew duties, cannot expect fireman to do menial work like that..

They do allow a reasonable safety margin whe running under the wires, so access to the smokebox, top of tender and long fire irons are a no no under the 25KV, pretty sure at such a high voltage you don't have to physically touch to wires to be up the proverbial creek, just being in very close proximity can be just as bad.

Here's a pic I took at Challow, though I was not there in time to see them fit it

PS I thought the footplate crew were brilliant yesterday with the whistle, it looks like every time they saw anyone watching they were whistling away. I'm surprised they had enough steam left for all the high speed running.

The plan seems to have changed again. 70013 is I understand now doing the Preston Glasgow leg on it's own with 5407 and 44871 going light, leaving Carnforth just 8 minutes ahead.

Absolutely - the 'juice' can jump quite a distance. You always treat electricity with the utmost respect, but you REALLY don't take chances with 25kV...

Just to add something extra and maybe those on board can help more with this ie. Alberta...... ;) We know Ray Poole was driving Nunny yesturday from Mark's photo's but who was firing? Be good to see if we could possibly have a daily update of those involved in and amongst the action from the business end.

Where's this myth keep coming from that NR don't allow it ?, it's tour companies getting a workable itinery that's the problem.

Whats actually happening on the Lickey though, is the train within the limits for the two loco's or is a 47 going to be doing minimal shoving ?.

Great day chasing 44871 and 70013. Seen at Rattery (light engine working Totnes to Plymouth) then Hemerdon (two shots) {wonderful sound}, climbing Whiteball and Brent Knoll (two shots). The final shot is particularly panoramic.

Thanks for posting up the videos and photos, the updates on how it's gone so far and the changes that have been made.

I hope to see the tour tomorrow around Golborne/Wigan area and the climb to Shap on Friday.

One question, does anyone know if the 20mph TSR has been lifted near Tebay that affected 70013's run a couple of weeks ago?

    Thanks, Neil.

BTW, in regards to headboards etc under the wires, as far as I can remember when I did my track safety course in the mid '80s with BR we were told not to approach within 9' of the overheads due to arcing, especially in damp/wet conditions. I don't know whether this has changed though?

I'm told that tomorrow the 47 will be running in a path behind the tour and will be towing D1015 as far as Tyseley.
Any Diesel fans, don't shoot the messenger but the few times I have are...

Many thanks to the organisers for ensuring that the steam section of the GB3 from Plymouth to Bristol today did not have a diesel at the back. What an experience to see or even better to travel behind. Two fantastic locomotives hauling 13 maroon coaches over the Devon banks in glorious sunshine. Simply superb. <BJ>
