I was pushing The Green Wheelbarrow this morning as it happens, unfortunately try as hard as I could, I couldn't quite get it up to 75mph.

 

I suppose that the wheel diameter would limit it to 60 anyway.....

 

Definitely a 3 Shredded Wheat turn I'd say!

 

You need a 6ft 2in driver to do 75mph. I am not sure if Saltydog qualifies.

Surely, someone has nailed this one by now. Although, can't recall seeing a really easy option mentioned....loadsa mail pick up points along the track with water balloons rather than mail !! I know some in the first few coaches could get wet, but all the same on this incrediable thread !!

 

If only the loco and stock were dual-braked. They could then use the redundant brake pipework to pump water from the toilet cisterns in the carriages. Just a thought ...

With leaf fall season long gone by Network Rail have lots of redundant water jetting MPVs. Why not run one along side with a bit of a mod to the jetting nozzle?

 

No one has suggested the "western region" flair to it...

Tickets arrived this morning. Times aren't as fast as perhaps we might have hoped. 146 mins Paddington to Bristol (Av 48.5 mph) and 161 mins for the return.

 

They'll probably cancel the journey at the last minute in honour of the fairly mundane (I hear from various accounts) GWR150 celebrations. Therefore it should really be marketed as The Bristolian 'non-starter' ! It would also solve the problem of taking water...

Exactly, could well be the first few miles out of Padd at 30 or less following a stopper then letting rip West of Reading for example, that would still be as much high speed runnign as you can expect in 2010, i'd imagine that if a Non stop Kings Cross - Edinburgh was a possibility that it would be something slower than Elizabethan timings with other trafic around now.

 

As I said in an earlier post please don't expect Bristolian speeds on these trips. You need to take into account that we will have to be put 'inside' a couple of times to allow HST's to pass.
But I know who the requested driver is.....so you can expect some spirited running when conditions allow.

 

Given the fact that we no longer have a unified railway and therefore all mainline celebrations are down to individual companies, Vintage Trains in cooperation with FGW have done well to put on the tours they have, taking into consideration the anti steam stance taken by FGW just two years ago, who would have thought that the same company would actively take part in the GWR celebrations? And don't forget that the second half of the year has yet to be published......although if the Looe branch takeover does happen then I for one will be there for one of the weekends.
Also don't forget that a lot of preserved former GWR lines are also holding GWR 175 celebrations. So get out and about and visit some of them.
I wonder if there will be celebrations on the same scale when some of the other railways reach 175 years old? Maybe it's just that us GWR people are that bit more enthusiastic about our glorious history.
