60163 Tornado 10th-13th April Crewe Heritage Centre

Please note that Tornado will be at the Crewe Heritage Centre between the 10th and 13th of April, the loco will arrive by road on the 9th and depart with a railtour on the 14th.

The centre will be open as normal on the 10th and 11th.

On Monday the 12th the centre will open from 4pm for people to come and see Tornado plus the A1 Trust will be giving a talk and filmshow about the project starting at 7pm which should last about 90 minutes.

On Tuesday the 13th the centre will be open between 4pm and 8pm where people will be able to see Tornado in steam.

On both the Monday and Tuesday children will be admitted free of charge if accompanied by an adult.

It looks a good event, especially the Monday evening with the talk and filmshow. I am working that evening but I will try to swap shifts as I would really like to get to this.

Would it be possible to extend opening by, say, an hour or so, to allow people to take pictures in the dark?

 

What is the reason for the road transportation?

 

It currently at the Great Central Railway which has no main line connection.

 

Whats it like for parking in the area at around 5pm onwards weekdays?

There's a giant Tesco right by the Heritage Centre which is perfect for parking.

 

Update on Tornado at Crewe. Please note that Tornado will now also be in steam tomorrow Sunday 11th of April.

 

Not a problem, opening has now been extended until 9pm.

 

Thanks. Actually I'm not sure I can make it myself but I'd like to see the results. It's getting dark at about 8pm now so if the staff are understanding and not overly keen to throw a couple of guys with tripods out into the mean streets of Crewe, that'd be great.

Night time railway photography is definitely worth taking on the challenge. Steam takes on a magical whispy aura. You need a tripod obviously, and possibly might need a wide angle lens depending on how much room there is around the engine. With a dslr or decent digital compact, you can have a few goes at getting the exposure (i.e. aperture/iso/shutter speed) right. I'm not sure how much light there will be on the subject from streetlights, etc, but Tornado is a nice light apple green colour so that should make her stand out from the background.

I'll see what the wife says anyway.
