An excellent - if pricey - excuse to take the Jeep for a day out - but it needed all its capability to keep up with this "50 mph" engine - especially with four on board.

I just need more practice at knowing photo spots between Maccynlleth and Shrewsbury.

Well, the way to go about it is to buy a shed load of maps, take as many trips on the line as necessary, then visit potential spots on foot. Simples.

Or use Google satellite pictures, check to see what the foliage is like, and Google street view, to locate where footpaths leave the road and also to see if there is anywhere to park, much cheaper.

Not so simple as that. 1) Google Earth/maps is out of date compared to the veg clearance that's been going on. 2) you can't see from it how clear the view is going to be on supposedly open spots, i.e. if you're able to see down to the rails or not. 3) Google street view doesn't cover lineside views from fields or mountain tops yet.

Oh yes I realise that there are drawbacks and that clearance is not countrywide by any means, but you can invariably see if there are areas of trees that are likely to obscure a view from a hill side. Agreed Google street view does not cover views from fields but in a couple of instances I have been able to see a line from the view through a gateway or where there is only a fence at the roadside. Then from that, being able to decide that from that field there should be a good view. Take this view from Moor Lane near Whalley, you can clearly see the Viaduct from the road so going into that field would afford an even better view. You need to open up the full width view to see what I mean.

Or worse. Much, much worse. This is Wales we're talking about. And I'm Welsh! Sadly, speaking the lingo doesn't confer any special advantages.
