I visited the line on Sunday & saw the coach parked between the carriage shed & the main line.

It was there yesterday too - I did try and get a photo on a passing train but it all went wrong (but thats another story!). The side you can see from the train is the side that was formally hidden from public view and is the worst side of it (the paintwork is peeling) where as all the photos above show the other side so I was going to say that if anyone is on the trains over the next couple of days if they could get a photo of this side it would be useful as that along with the recent picture that M59137 posted that would give everyone a general all round view of the external condition.

The Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway have had GWR Resurant coach 9605 up for sale for years now, the coach is in a poor state, but we are open to offers on this historic coach that was once part of the national collection. The coach can be viewed here - http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=257

Please contact info@pbrly.co.uk for more information.

The railway does not want to scrap the coach but there is certainly no furture for it at Blaenavon.

Please let us know if you are interested.

It is shocking how that coach ended up in that state. The trouble is that it is such a big project to attempt that it would be out of reach for a lot of groups. Hopefully somone like the GWS will take it on (I am sure it would make a great addition to their collection!) and this coach does have a future.

I agree, the vehicle was brought to the railway by a private individual with all the plans in the world, however, he disappeared off the face of the earth and the railway seized the coach unde rthe TORT act with a view of disposing of it to gain back some of the lost cash, as yet we have not found anyone willing to take it on. Please come forward if you can offer this vehicle even a glimer of hope before it is too late!

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Hi Pete

Do you know how much they are asking for it? Did it ever have asbestos in it? Has it been cleared of asbestos?

We had obtained a quote from SVR, we we're going to purchase the coach. They we're asking too much for what we could offer.

We are still interested in this however for the right price. I don't want to see this scrapped.

If the S.V.R. are prepared to scrap the coach then it ain't worth more than £2k. It would be lovely at Llangollen , but the ruling junta don't like heritage vehicles - unless they belong to people who appear to have lots of money.

Sadly there have been too many cases of vehicles coming to the line with promises that they would be restored and running within reasonable timescales - One vehicle that I remember was promised to be 'operational in two years' is still not anywhere close 15 years later, so it is understandable that there is a reluctance to accept even more.

    Martin,

Unfortunately we have the situation where long standing members who happen to own items of stock are being harrassed by
'management' who aren't going to be around in two years from now (or less in certain cases). The people making these decisions to suit their own ends seem free to bring in items of stock at will.
The large number of members I have spoken to are very unhappy at what is going on & the voting at the next couple of a.g.m.'s will no doubt reflect this.

    Bob.

Yes that seems to have been the case for a long time and definitely applies to the vehicle I was thinking of (with the 2 year timescale). Presumably you will finally be standing for election to the board to take up this issue?

Sadly, I think quite a few vintage carriages are going to bite the dust over the next few years. They are expensive to restore and take a lot of time and work, and most railways are short of siding space and looking to get rid of "eyesores". It will be interesting to see whether the West Somerset goes through with its original project to form two vintage trains, or if they go for a less amnitious target of one, having amassed quite a collection of "henhouses" in a short space of time. It would be nice to see some of the new generation lines stepping in to take on some of the casualties, as most could do with an attractiveness boost, but I doubt whether most would have the resources. In the case of the SVR coach, it would make a nice project for a group like the Gwilli Vintage Carriage Group but they probably already have enough on their hands.

I agree that they are expensive to restore, however I think of just as much danger to such vehicles are the owners who have either delude themselves that they will get round to restoring the vehicle 'one day', or those who place such an unrealistic valuation on such vehicles as to make them practically unobtainable.

Please note though I'm not referring to anyone in particular with these remarks.

Unfortunatley that is the case, we can just about manage the 4 wheelers which themselves require a lot of work. On New Gen lines and some of the more established ones the priority is the 'bread and butter' MK1's which doesn't leave a lot of room for this type of coach. Afraid that even Heritage coach restorers will always have more coaches waiting to be done than ones running, you are right, the long term future of several vintage carriages is a concern.
