Got to say Brian, that the great traditions of 1960s SR steam running with Merchant Navy pacifics are alive and well thanks to yourself and the others involved.

Has anyone mentioned to you the annual SR steam crews get together, (includes us enthusiasts from those days too now)? I know Tony Leaver mentioned it to Wayne at Yeovil Junction. August 11th at the Bluebell Railway. Just turn up and enjoy yourself. You and Wayne could update the retired steam crews as to how a MN is to drive these days. And tease them about the light loads they always had behind the tender in the 1960s! LOL!

Brian. That climb to Roundwood was something else and in my top 5 best with Merchants for power output.

For those few minutes I was back in the 1960s, especially as many of my old friends from those days were with me on the train.

I guess you weren't using full regulator though. 2/3 plus about 35% ?

Can I add my thanks to everyone else's - (we spoke briefly at Woking.) That speed over the top would have been pretty reasonable with that load starting out of Soton. To do it from Eastleigh was really impressive. But you would have needed the steam to do it so please pass on my thanks to Rob.

Nice shot. We were doing exactly 70 mph at that point, and were not far from catching the stopper in front!

Glad that up demu was only three cars. Much longer and I would have missed getting a time at Milepost 31 as it overtook us!

Thanks Bryan - the family had asked and I'd guessed at 65+. You were very close to the stopper!

The good thing for me was that the sight stunned three non-believers - who are now committed to taking some of their seven grandchildren to show them the spectacle. Hopefully some of them will help the "next generation". Of course, being on time, running at speed, looking resplendent and the finishing touch of a whistle all helped the cause.

What a fantastic trip, the run to Woking really blew away the early morning cobwebs, I had a little chuckle to myself when the brakes came on before Andover to keep us under the limit, have all the bridge restrictions now been lifted? The noise from the front on the return was something else. Any news on the old girl for next Saturday?
